What is remote work? Remote work is simply a job that you do from home, instead of at a workplace or an office. You communicate with co-workers and supervisors via telephone, Internet video conference and email. Generally the work is done on a computer – transcribing, managing websites or social media, analyzing data and producing reports, resolving customer complaint tickets, and the like.
Tools. You don’t need much to work as a home-based freelance writer, but there are some tools that you must have. The most important will be your computer. Get the fastest Internet access that you can afford. It doesn’t matter what kind of computer you get. Just make sure you’re comfortable enough to spend a lot of time with it. Most clients will request that you submit your work as a Microsoft Word document, so make sure that whatever programs you use are compatible. In addition, because you’ll be spending so much time at the computer, make sure that you have a good work area with proper lighting. Some clients will want to be able to reach you by phone or Skype, so have both set up and accessible. You’ll need an invoicing program, such as Freshbooks, and a good bookkeeping system to keep track of sales, orders, and accounts receivables.

I did most my college online, hold four certifications in fitness which I did all from home, and built a very successful personally training business online. It’s important to know you own strengths and weaknesses. I’m good at motivating myself, but I’m not good at getting out and meeting new people. That’s something I work on each week as it’s important with a client based job that you keep bringing in new people. To help myself with that, I take my kids to multiple activities plus go to different parks to meet people. I also have goal of starting a networking group in my area soon. Knowing what you are good at and what you need to work on will really help you succeed. If staying on track, working each day, and being productive is something you struggle with, ask for help! I have a few people I check in with a few time a week to see how their work has gone! Never be afraid to ask when you need help.
Successfully working from home can be an incredibly rewarding, amazing, and productive experience. Doing so just takes a little surveying of your situation and figuring out the best way to make it work.
