At the home office, however, I find that it's easy for you to become your own worst enemy. Because when you're not surrounded by coworkers, you're free to drop those pesky inhibitions. At the home office, no one's watching. You don't necessarily feel that same peer pressure or communal obligation to get stuff done. (Also: You don't have to wear pants.)
Nice writing style Ben. I’m finding out very quickly that to make any money writing, you have to read, read, and then read some more, no matter how smart you feel you are on a subject, before writing your first sentence. I have always been a fan of multiple income streams and am thrilled by the ideas of proofreading, editing, blogging, freelancing and transcribing. Having spent one of my careers doing just that for a large corporation, it’s a perfect fit, but now I can get credit for my work, thanks again for a great article.
I have been running several (off-line) businesses for years and am now starting out online to see what I can do. It may seem to others that I have no idea where I’m going but I have a plan 😉 What I do know is that there is no such thing as a successful ‘get rich quick’ way to do it. It requires lots of effort and hard-work. I’m not looking to be a millionaire (although it would be nice) but I’m happy if I can earn a decent living doing something I love. I know several people who have fallen for the ‘get rich quick’ gimmicks and have only ended up disappointed and disillusioned.
Coding – whether for developing apps or designing websites – is another big business online! It’s a pretty egalitarian business as well, since you can teach yourself to code in many languages and you can code from wherever you are. At its most basic, all you need is a computer (or laptop or tablet), an Internet connection for connecting with project files or far-flung colleagues, and a text editor. (The software involved can get more complicated than that, as you go along.) There are more small businesses wanting customized websites and startups trying to create that next great app every day, and coders can make a living along the way.
As you can see, there are lots of fun and flexible ways to make money from home! Whether you're looking for a part-time position to supplement your family's income or a full-time career, there is something for everyone! And with advances in technology and a widespread shift from negative attitudes towards telecommuting towards acceptance, more and more positions are available remotely.
Surveys aren’t the best way to make money fast. But there’s a certain appeal to clicking a few buttons and earning money when you’d otherwise be doing nothing. Here’s our recommendation: Sign up for these legitimate survey sites all at once. Chances are, you’ll qualify for at least one or two surveys on each site a month, and the rewards will add up.
Working at home can become isolating, unless you make an effort to build your network and maintain relationships. This might be easier in a major metropolitan area with lots of networking opportunities and industry meetings. However even if you have to travel and use lots of virtual tools--LinkedIn is a great place to start--maintaining your network should be on your to-do list every day.
Are You Able to Create Boundaries? One of the most attractive elements of a home-based business can also be the most challenging: the lack of clear physical and psychological boundaries between your work life and your home life. If you don't clarify those boundaries, you're likely to sell yourself short in both camps. "You have to think of yourself as a businesswoman, even though you may be sitting in your kitchen in your sweatpants and sneakers," Parlapiano says. "Be protective of your work time, and be able to tell people no."
Another niche for home-based writers is launching a blog (short for "weblog"). The best bloggers have a deep knowledge base about a niche topic and can develop an audience of readers who visit their blog regularly. While anyone can start a blog, only about 2 percent of bloggers actually earn a living by blogging. It's tough work (1) becoming an expert in an area that (2) people want to read about regularly and (3) writing about it well enough that they come back often, but it can be done (learn more here).
Think you don't have any unused gold items around the house? Think again! Chances are, you have a chain you haven't worn since high school, an old ring, or a broken gold necklace somewhere in your home. With gold prices at all-time highs, above $1,300 an ounce, selling old items containing gold is one of fastest ways to make a quick buck. BUT, you want to be sure you work with a reputable vendor.
Education requirements vary depending on what kind of work is being done. To be hired for a Work From Home position in Medical Billing, for example, applicants are often expected to have medical billing training and experience. Many online writing jobs require a resume and writing samples. Bookkeeping from home positions also require appropriate training and on-the-job experience.
What is remote work? Remote work is simply a job that you do from home, instead of at a workplace or an office. You communicate with co-workers and supervisors via telephone, Internet video conference and email. Generally the work is done on a computer – transcribing, managing websites or social media, analyzing data and producing reports, resolving customer complaint tickets, and the like.
The key is to make the class sound unique and irresistible. Don’t just teach a cooking class; come up with specialty cooking classes. You might teach a class on how to make artesian breads, or cinnamon rolls that rival Cinnabon. The possibilities are endless, and if you consistently offer educational and fun classes, you’ll have people signing up over and over again.
Yahoo bought up Associated Content and have amassed their own army of writers to create articles on numerous topics.  They also utilize their writers to do local feature stories for Yahoo Local cities.  They work similarly to Demand Media Studios, in that you can “claim” assignments.  I signed up to see how it worked, and it seems as though most of the payment for them is “performance based”.  In other words, you get paid based on the number of hits your article gets.
3. Birch Creek Communications – BCC periodically looks for people to do data entry; when they do, they’re looking for independent contractors just like everyone else. Pay is by the job and your performance, with their uppermost pay range going to those with consistent near-perfect accuracy. You can set whatever schedule you wish with them, but it looks like work is most widely available Monday through Friday on a corporate schedule.
NextWave Advocacy, LLC contracts with news junkies that are politically aware, home-based individuals who are critical thinkers to make outbound calls to educate citizens and help them participate in contacting their elected officials. No sales or fundraising calls are involved. This is not a telemarketing opportunity. The pay is $12.00 per hour with a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week.
These three points may seem like common sense, but the truth is that the people who run these scams are very good at what they do. They’ve been able to deceive many intelligent people because they present their “opportunities” so well that almost anyone will believe them. When you’re looking for a new job or extra income, it’s easy to get lulled in to a comfort zone where they can take advantage of you. Keep your guard up – always.

The "honest" fine print addresses that, too. "After 14 days, you will be charged a monthly fee of $47.50 for … membership. After the 30-day trial [you] will be charged $99 for the program … You may stop payment on any pre-authorized charge by notifying [us] at least three business days prior to the scheduled charge date." Unfortunately, there is no clear contact information listed on the site, so finding a person to contact about stopping your monthly payment of $47.50 (and your $99 fee) may be a bit difficult.

Some of our students share my same passion & dedication for the markets, while others truly use the markets as a means to an end.  They trade the first 2hrs then go enjoy their hobbies.  Both are enjoying success, albeit in slightly different ways.  This year I’ve been fortunate enough to be able to day trade from France, California, New York City, Rhode Island, and Las Vegas.  Although I sometimes live the lifestyle other traders like to brag about, I avoid bragging or even mentioning that I’m traveling.  I’ve realized that the majority of our students want to day trade so they can supplement their income and achieve financial freedom.  It’s not so they can live the lifestyle of the rich and famous.  While taking nice vacations can be a perk of being successful, it shouldn’t be what drives you to be successful.  I don’t believe materialistic things are a good motivator.  Having a passion is what sparks motivation & drive.  That’s why I try to nurture a passion in each of our students, even if it’s not a passion for day trading.
What It Is: Create virtual displays of art and graphics by assembling images, typographies, and motion graphics for published, printed, or digital media. This may include drafting logos, packaging, labels, and advertisements for brands. Top candidates will have skills in creativity, typography, software, web design, Adobe Photoshop, technology, and more.

9. Amazon mTurk – Amazon Mechanical Turk is the lion of microtask sites and you can find data entry work among their thousands of available tasks. Once you register with their site, you can select HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks) that sound interesting to you; sometimes, you must complete a qualifier to land the task. You’re only paid if your work is accepted. There can be some shady tasks listed on mTurk, so be careful and don’t pick up any HITs that feel wrong. Payment is made via Amazon gift cards or through bank deposit.

Accommodate Multiple Forms of Payment: Many deal-seekers carry cash, but you want to accommodate every potential buyer. So, in the days leading up to the event, consider purchasing a point-of-sale system that can accept credit cards. Square is a popular and relatively cost-effective option: it doesn’t cost anything upfront and bundles credit card processing fees into its own per-transaction fees, resulting in a net expense of 2.75% for most transactions (net of $97.25 for every $100 charged). This is a small price to pay to capture the ever-growing cashless consumer demographic. On the day before the sale, visit the bank and grab $100 in small bills and coin rolls to ensure you’ll have enough change for buyers who do prefer cash.

Fortunately, over the past 10 years, there's been a vast increase in the number of networking options available to home-based entrepreneurs. Priscilla Huff, for instance, uses a community room at a local bank to host an annual meeting of local businesswomen. The event gives work-at-home moms the chance to meet, exchange business cards, and create relationships and alliances that can help them build their business. It's easy enough, Huff says, to organize a similar event in your own community. She also recommends tapping into one of the Women's Business Development Centers, which are partly funded by the Small Business Administration, for advice and access to networking opportunities.

It can be so easy to get distracted as a telecommuter that you avoid breaks altogether. Don't let the guilt of working in the building you sleep in prevent you from taking five to relax. Rather than just opening YouTube and watching some comfort clips, however, use your breaks to get away from your desk. Go for a walk outside or spend time with others who might also be in the house.
If you liked the idea of owning your day, just wait until you own your week. If you've wondered how many more runs you could get in on the ski slopes on a Wednesday (or whatever it is you like to do for fun), or how much easier and cheaper it would be to travel during times when fewer people are able, the answer is: a lot. In fact, the only drawback is that friends and family probably don't have the same flexibility. Once you get to the point where you own the week, however, you'll find yourself longing a lot less for the weekend.
Food. The second word in “Bed and Breakfast” is just as important as the first. Some B&Bs have tried to serve their guests muffins, juice, and coffee in the mornings, but the most successful hosts understand that the breakfast they serve will make a lasting impression on their guests. You can get creative and serve the type of breakfast traditional for the area that you’re in. For instance, if your home is located in the South, then eggs, grits, and biscuits may go over well, while Southwest guests may appreciate a traditional Tex-Mex meal. Whatever you decide, make it memorable and make sure that your guests feel welcome and appreciated. Make it memorable, and they’ll spread the word for you.

If you are working from home you do not have to commute to work. Commuting creates added stress to begin the day and adds it all back at the end of the day. Use this time gained to be more productive and energetic at work and use the additional free time to your benefit. While it is important to avoid distractions while working at home, it also makes things like child care and home maintenance easier.
The reasons you've listed are exactly the reasons that I work from home! No more need to commute, dress in a certain way for work, no expense of buying lunch. My only problem is that I continue to work again in the evening just because I enjoy it! Ha!! I guess that's not too bad of a "problem" to have! :) I get distracted throughout the day though, so I am working on that. Great advice! Thanks for sharing!
I remember when I first started working from home and I was terrified to leave my computer for even a second. Irrational thoughts entered my head: “What if I’m grabbing coffee and miss an IM and don’t answer within a few seconds!? They’ll think I’m not working hard enough!” It took me a few weeks to realize how utterly ridiculous this was. If I was in an office, guess what? I’d go grab coffee without a second thought.

The practical aspects of running a business out of a home office are also addressed. The Joy of Working from Home provides useful strategies for creating a business plan, low-cost marketing techniques, tips for networking in the community, and ways to keep expenses down. There is down-to-earth advice for avoiding the pitfalls of zoning and tax requirements, information on purchasing office equipment and supplies, and guidelines for contracting outside services. A resource section creates access to important publications, home-based business associations, government agencies, and database information for effective business and professional marketing.
Your “Rent a friend” sounds alot like the “escort services” that destroyed my marriage of 25 years. After all its much more fun to “rent” 25 year old women to spend time with than stay at home and take care of the 5 children you helped to create. So glad to see you recommending prostitution as a legitimate source of income. Oh, I know……this is not prostitution, its an opportunity for adults to meet new people and have new experiences.

When I saw the title “5 Harsh Realities of Making a Living Online” in my Google Reader I was very happy. I agree with you, not enough people talk about the fact that it’s NOT EASY. It takes a tremendous amount of time, effort and energy – and even then you are not guaranteed the results you want. It’s basically just as risky and time consuming as building a business in the “Real” world (i.e. not online.) For some reason, people think that being “online” makes it easier – but it doesn’t.
Say someone has 500 pieces of clothing, nothing is separated into sizes, you break up the lot, sell it by size and make a lot of money. There were times where I'd even pay $15-$20 for a huge lot and make back $200. Same thing with eBay. If you have a mannequin, you could start selling them piece by piece and get a lot more than that. It just depends on how much time you have.
You must be at least 21 years old, have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the U.S. (three years if you’re under 23 years old), have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check. Also, your car must be a four-door, seat at least four passengers (excluding the driver), be registered in-state and be covered by in-state insurance.
You can also get $5 to start investing in small businesses with a site called Kickfurther. At this site you can help these companies purchase inventory to fill their initial orders – these are startups, companies making iphone accessories, body care products, backpacks, sports equipment, etc. They all are innovating but need extra capital to get started. In return for helping them out you get interest – usually 5-10% over 3-6 months. That can add up to like 20-30% per year!
This is the classic work-at-home mom gig, but it's for a lot more people than just moms! Selling stuff you love can be a great way to make extra money from home, even if you work in an office most of the day. Direct selling is scalable to your own lifestyle, ambition, and talents. You can keep it casual and mostly sell to friends and acquaintances. Or, if you really get to networking online and in person, you can build a client base outside your existing circles.
No commuting. Ian Aronovich is the president and co-founder of GovernmentAuctions.org, and says that he most appreciates the noticeable lack of travel time. “You never have to deal with the painful rush hour commute to and back from the company office. In addition, you can work at any time of the day or night whenever it’s most convenient for you.”
You can find more information on how to make a living on eBay as well as other sources of how to make a living from home on my blog. I have been fortunate to be able to be a single stay-at-home-mom, and I wish all the best to you as well in your endeavor to work from home. In our economy and the way things are going, this will become more and more possible as the years go on. There are so many things you can do to work from home and earn legitimate money to help your family. eBay is but one way.
Some scams might involve asking you to pay for a “training” book or CD that explains how to make money in a certain business. Others charge for supposedly “exclusive” products that you’re supposed to sell at a premium. Avoid both of these scenarios. Remember, you should never have to pay to get a job. And if someone asks you to, you can be sure that it’s a scam.
In efforts to reduce costs, many companies across many industries hire employees and contractors to work from home. Between 2005 and 2012, the commonality of telecommuting increased dramatically. According to a publication by Global Workforce Analytics, for-profit companies saw an increase of over 70 percent, and not-for-profit saw an increase of over 87 percent in the incidence of telecommuting during that seven-year time frame. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, when people heard about telecommuting jobs, they would often associate them with either mail-stuffing jobs in which the pay was minuscule or in some cases, with scams.
Keep in mind though, you don’t need a website to do sponsored content since you can also get paid if you have a lot of social media followers. My wife has a pretty big Instagram following, and she gets all kinds of sponsorships. Not only does she get paid in cash, but we get a lot of free stuff, too. We’ve received free rugs, free lights, and free carpet cleaners. She only promotes things she loves though, so this strategy works really well for her.
Working customer service involves helping customers either by phone or through online chats. You may be answering questions, troubleshooting technical difficulties, or explaining options depending on the company. A background in customer service is likely to be helpful, as well as an abundance of patience. Customers are often already frustrated when they call customer service, and it’s your job to help resolve the issue. You should be friendly, a good listener, and able to remain calm.
With so many businesses operating mostly, or even completely, online, it’s no wonder that many hire virtual assistants to help keep them organized and complete administrative tasks. According to the International Virtual Assistants Association, these workers are “independent contractors who (from a remote location, usually their home or office) support multiple clients in a variety of industries by providing administrative, creative, and technical services.”
Communicate professionally by being active and engaged in conference calls and looking presentable in video conferences, and write concise emails with meaningful subject lines. Nearly every remote worker also recommends finding a way to interact with other people by conversing outside of work with distant co-workers and befriending fellow remote workers (even of other companies) – it will help you feel more connected and less isolated.
Keep in mind, however, that there is a "cost of doing business." In direct sales, that cost is likely to include the purchase of kits, catalogs, and product samples. You might even be required to maintain an inventory of products. So be sure you understand the cost commitment, not just the profit potential, before you sign on the dotted line. (Also realize that you assume some legal liability in becoming a product distributor, as explained in this Consumer Alert from the Federal Trade Commission.)

Believe it or not, you don’t have to be a CPA to start bookkeeping. Just sign-up for a bookkeeping course at a community college or even online, such as this course from the Accounting Coach. Once completed you can start making a start earning. The median salary is $34,000. There are some stay at home bookkeepers I've talked with making upwards of $70,000.

The ability to communicate quickly and reliably is the most priceless attribute a remote employee needs to succeed. Update your manager or boss frequently. Most offices use some group chat service, like Slack, to communicate with each other during the day, and tools like Google Hangouts or Skype for video calls and meetings. Make sure they’re installed and you know how to use them, and make your presence known to your colleagues (especially your boss) when you are available and working.

Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast in October 2012 while I lived in New York and juggled three jobs. Along with working at a restaurant and a news agency on nights and weekends, I spent my weekdays commuting from Brooklyn to a media company in Manhattan. When the hurricane made landfall, it crippled the city’s public transportation system for weeks, leaving me all but severed from office headquarters.
Automattic, the web development company that runs WordPress, leans almost entirely on work-from-home employees, in a real-world nod to its open-source, untamed-Internet roots. The company has 400 employees in 60 countries, says Sara Rosso, the company’s director of marketing (who works from her home in Italy). In a 2013 interview with BusinessInsider.com, founder Matt Mullenweg said, “Rather than being anti-office, we’re more location-agnostic.” And frankly, their website’s Work With Us page would have caused my lifetime-steel-mill-working grandfather to faint. Behold:
Shipping. You will only have a few days to ship a book after it sells, and even less time if you agree to include two-day or overnight shipping as part of your options. And since you’ll want to save as much as you can on the shipping, you’ll have to devise a plan. Many people set aside specific days for shipping – say 3 days a week – and then make one big trip to the post office. As long as there isn’t anything else in the package, you can send books via media mail, which is the least expensive option. Finally, your books will need to be packaged in a way that they won’t get damaged in transit.

Pearson offers educational content, tools, and resources through all stages of life – from K12 to higher education to industry and professional. Pearson hires work-from-home tutors and teachers to teach in a broad range of subjects to a broad range of ages. Job Search Tip: Not all of Pearson’s work-from-home jobs are labeled as such. Try searching “tutor” and “work-from-home” as keywords or “virtual” as location.
AirTreks is a travel agency that offers international and multi-stop tickets for travel. AirTreks provides training, but requires prospective employees to have traveled to five or more countries. AirTreks Travel Agents use Amadeus GDS. Job Search Tip: Work-from-home Travel Agent positions are often listed as “Travel Planner”. Starting pay is $2,000+commission.
Need more ideas on how to make money online? Another strategy is using webinars to market your product, service, or course. I’ve done webinars to promote my financial planning practice and to drum up interest in my online course for financial advisors. With a webinar, you’re basically offering a lot of tips and advice for free — usually in a live format. At the end though, you pitch your paid product or service with the goal of securing a few deals.
Set aside a specific area or room of your home as your office. When you move into that space, this becomes a subconscious signal that it is time to work. The same applies once you've finished for the day. Move out of that space, or clear away your work material if the space serves another purpose. Your brain is better able to"turn on" or "turn off" the work day when your work space is distinct.
