But the mystery-shopping scam is a bit different. In the scam version, the unsuspecting shopper is told to provide feedback on a Western Union or MoneyGram outlet. The scammer sends the newly hired mystery shopper a check, along with instructions to deposit it in the shopper's personal bank account. Then the shopper is instructed to go to a Western Union or MoneyGram outlet and wire a portion of that money (drawn from the shopper's bank account) to a particular location.
Great Ideas! I use Instagc. In your spare time on your computer. While you won’t get rich – this is a perfect way to earn extra spending money – either cash or gift cards. I am a mom of a college kid who uses this site and earns his own spending money for gas or his fun things. I myself have earned over $500 this year and only get to spend a couple of hours (if lucky) a day.
Find time to go for short walks to help inspire productivity and creativity. One of the blessings of working remotely is the opportunity to live a more active lifestyle instead of being deskbound, but it’s important to make activity a habit. Otherwise you’ll fall into the inertia of sitting at your desk all day and never leaving the house at night.
I really like point #1. So many people I talk to are excited about their idea because nobody is doing it or else they don’t want to do something because someone already is. I’m a believer that no competition is a worse sign than a lot of competition. If you were mining for gold back in the day, would you rather be near San Francisco where everyone was finding gold, or would you rather be in New Mexico with no competition (assuming nobody found gold in New Mexico)? The analogy is a little weak, but it gets the point across. Thanks for the great post, and keep up the legendary work.
You’ll become a communications expert. When having a quick meeting in the break room isn’t possible, you have to get up to speed on what communication tools are available, says Fay. “From texting, Skyping, emailing, web meetings—out of necessity, you become very savvy in all of those.” In today’s digital world, knowing how to navigate these technologies makes you more marketable.

More than ever, writers are needed to formulate news articles, create content, and come up with the creative ideas that fill the pages of nearly every site on the Internet. And although many bigger sites have in-house writers, a growing number of sites outsource their content and hire freelance writers and content creators. Writing experience is very helpful, but what you really need to get started are drive, ambition, and the ability to find a unique angle on events that happen every day.
7. SigTrack – SigTrack works with independent contractors to record whether petition signers are voters or to process voter registration and other forms. Since this work revolves around the petition season, they only hire at certain times. Pay is per work unit based on accuracy, and they require that you maintain at least 98% accuracy to satisfy your contract and also peer review others’ work. They pay via PayPal. This position is only available to U.S. citizens and you’ll be required to do a short Skype call during the interview process to establish identity. Equipment requirements are pretty standard, but note that they require dual monitors.

Fortunately, over the past 10 years, there's been a vast increase in the number of networking options available to home-based entrepreneurs. Priscilla Huff, for instance, uses a community room at a local bank to host an annual meeting of local businesswomen. The event gives work-at-home moms the chance to meet, exchange business cards, and create relationships and alliances that can help them build their business. It's easy enough, Huff says, to organize a similar event in your own community. She also recommends tapping into one of the Women's Business Development Centers, which are partly funded by the Small Business Administration, for advice and access to networking opportunities.
What It Is: Create virtual displays of art and graphics by assembling images, typographies, and motion graphics for published, printed, or digital media. This may include drafting logos, packaging, labels, and advertisements for brands. Top candidates will have skills in creativity, typography, software, web design, Adobe Photoshop, technology, and more.
Obviously, I'm a huge fan of blogging, and here's why. First, you can write on any topic under the sun — so you'll always be working in a niche that you're passionate about and that you have experience in. Second, it only takes a couple of hundred dollars to get started (you'll need to purchase your domain name, web hosting, and a blogging theme). Third, you can monetize in a ton of different ways — which makes it easier to start generating money quickly.

”Working with Justin and G.I. JOBS, I saw an IMMEDIATE impact on my online visibility, direct contact activity and personal productivity in my focused job search activities. Their job search board immediately identified multiple high paying, skills appropriate positions in my area with companies that I’m excited to explore employment opportunities with. Once we identified those companies, then the team went to work to help me build connections and personal relationships with influencers and inside recruiters and executives at the targeted companies to make sure that I had my foot in the door from the start! My LinkedIn activity increased by more than 5,000% in less than 96 hours. My active contacts (in person or on phone) with in-house recruiters went from 2 contacts in 30 days to 15 contacts in less than 4 days. His ability to connect me with leads and a path to interviews just blew me away! Thank you, Justin and team G.I. JOBS!"
If you love children and want a career in childcare from your home, then a home daycare center could be right for you. Starting a home daycare center, like any home business, takes a lot of work, research, start-up costs and networking to get it going. Every state has different regulations, which could require physical improvements to your home. Learn more about starting a home daycare.
What’s more, it’s time to get those list-making muscles in working order. Without face-to-face communication, it’s easy to let things slip through the cracks, so you’ll need to find ways to be as organized as possible. You might find that you like to write things down in a notebook, or perhaps you prefer calendar notifications. Find what works best for you to keep you organized and on task.
For those of you with technical skills, freelancing may be the answer. There are plenty of people who need graphics, web programming, and much more, but lack the time or knowledge to do it themselves. Unlike consulting, you would do the actual tasks yourself. Freelancing might be better for people who don’t want to run their own business and have the ability to turn down work you don’t want to do.
Research. You need to know what others are selling before you decide what wares you will offer. Lots of people sell handmade items, but those who work hard to make their items unique in some way are the ones who truly stand out. After you’ve decided on a product, check out the other sellers on Etsy and find what they’re offering, and then figure out how you can do it differently.
"Every client wants to know that they're special and getting your undivided attention," says Paul Edwards, coauthor of Working From Home (Tarcher/Putnam, 1999). "We live in a very competitive environment that's focused on customer service." So while your customers may tolerate the occasional tiny voice in the background, it's unreasonable to expect anyone to deal with constant interruptions.
Socialize. Especially when you’re getting started, you need to establish contacts who are already immersed in the business. They can act as mentors, keep you up to date on industry changes, and even help you land your first or subsequent job. Look for the local chapter of the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) in your area and join.
Where I live right now I have to drive 20 to 50 miles to get to a town, and they are only paying $8 an hour so it is not worth driving to work every day. So I have become a stay at home mom. I have been looking for something I can do at home to help out with the bills for over a year now. It is driving me crazy not working. Can anyone help. Can you please email me with any information you might have.
Many online job platforms such as Upwork.com also have their own system for recognizing and removing job scams. According to the site, many of them involve “employers” who try to pay workers outside the site’s payment system, and engage in some sort of check or money order fraud. For more tips on avoiding job scams on freelancing sites, read about it here.

If you’d like to specialize in medical transcription, there are certification courses you can take; you can also benefit from having healthcare-related experience so you’re familiar with the terminology. The same applies for legal transcription – you can do a certification course, and it’s helpful if you know legal lingo or even have legal reference materials at home. If you’d like to do law enforcement transcription, that most often has overlapping requirements with legal transcription.
Speaking of teaching, even if you don’t have a teaching degree or current certificate, you may be able to make money teaching English online. This is a great side gig for those working a full-time job. The scheduling is flexible and you can work in the early morning, evenings and on weekends. And the pay is pretty good, too! Some ESL tutors are paid up to $21 per 40-minute class. A few companies to consider:
Craigslist: Craigslist is definitely the scrappiest of the major online resale options. The advantage of Craigslist is its enticing profit potential, thanks to the total lack of listing and selling fees for most items. The disadvantages are many, but include potential safety risks and higher chances of nonpayment. If you do choose Craigslist, keep your wits about you and use the buddy system.

Set specific "hours of business" if they are not preset for you. While it's true that you may have some flexibility with hours you set, especially if the business is yours, there are still only 24 hours in a day and a specific number should be allocated to "office hours." If the business belongs to someone else, the hours may be preset to coincide with that business' hours. That can be anytime they assign, including the middle of the night as is required of some virtual customer service representatives. The thing is, working haphazardly at anytime that you want each day will probably cause you to cheat yourself out of valuable working time. That time will inevitably slip away from you without you ever noticing until you haven't finished that project on time.
A second business opportunity advertised heavily on radio — this one by self-proclaimed "beach bum" Ty Coughlin — is something called The Inner Circle. There are variations operated by other people, but all are based on a marketing approach known as the Reverse Funnel System. The "system" requires potential recruits to pay $50 just to get information about what the business does, thereby winnowing out all but the most interested people right from the start. (A funnel turned upside down — with the small hole at the top—would limit what could pass through. That's what Coughlin's system does; thus the name, reverse funnel.)

Somehow it all seems too good to be true. And it is. Poke around a bit and you're likely to find the fine print. This is from an actual site promoting a make-money-on-Google scam: "All persons mentioned on this blog are fictional examples … for demonstration purposes only." What? Cindy, the stay-at-home Christian mom with three wonderful kids, isn't real? "The statements contained herein come from many different people and are not necessarily being made about the specific products discussed." All those endorsements from folks thanking Cindy aren't really about Cindy and her money-making program?

Successfully working from home can be an incredibly rewarding, amazing, and productive experience. Doing so just takes a little surveying of your situation and figuring out the best way to make it work. And I can say this with infinite certainty—after finding my groove and seeing how wonderful it can truly be, I don’t see myself ever setting foot in a cubicle again if I can help it.
To make money from home in customer service, you’ll need a high school degree or the equivalent for many jobs. For some customer service jobs, a post-secondary degree or some college may be required. It’s usually absolutely necessary to have the right equipment, which means an up-to-date computer; a quiet, wired workspace or home office; and, often, noise-cancelling headphones. On the non-tech front, excellent interpersonal skills are a must.
I keep a high energy, positive vibe when talking about making money online. If you work INTELLIGENTLY, it becomes quite easy. It is really easy, actually, but so few people act intelligently, it’s scary. Take my comments. If I write a really in-depth, value-packed comment on this blog, and on Problogger, my SEO juice goes through the roof, my blog reaches page 1 or 2 of google for a very competitive keyword, and I get 500 to 1000 hungry eyeballs on my blog, an any given day. Not bad for 5 to 10 minutes of offering my opinion, right? So for me, it’s easy to drive tons of targeted traffic to my blog, and make money. But if you scroll the comments section, most people do not act intelligently. No impactful comments. No click throughs. No backlink juice. Poor search engine rank.
When you are at home all day, it can be easy to get distracted too! That book you wanted to read is calling your name, one more episode on Netflix can’t hurt, scrolling through social media will only take a minute….but before you know it, the whole day has passed by and you got no work done! This is something I hear from people all the time! Or, they spend time doing things they think is work, but it’s really not! One of my best tips is to sit down one day every week, and plan out when you are doing to work, what you need to get done, and how many hours you are going to work. Put activities at the top that make you income! Next follow it by items that could make you income. End it with activities that don’t bring in income. This way, you always get done the things that will bring you money! For me, I love to blog but that doesn’t bring me much income, so it’s always the last item on my list. Sure it might be fun, but If I want to work from home, I have to make an income so that means income producing activities first!
Ratings. Whenever someone buys a book from you, they will have the opportunity to give the transaction a rating. This is when they’ll tell other potential buyers whether the book was in the condition that you described, whether it was mailed on time, and if your communications were pleasant and helpful. One bad rating can hamper sales, and a couple of them can downright stop them. Excel at customer service and your ratings will help your company grow.

It's easy to get distracted in any working environment, including your actual company's office. But if you're planning to work from home, you'll need to take extra care to ensure that your distractions are minimized. That's because when you work in an office, you can only get away with so much chatting or online shopping before your manager starts to take notice. When you do your job from home, that same level of monitoring doesn't exist -- so if you happen to share an apartment with roommates who are home during the day and tend to host video game tournaments, that setup probably won't work.

In an era of aging baby boomers and changing healthcare laws, medical coding and billing jobs offer relatively stable ways to make money from home. To qualify for medical coding jobs, you’ll need certification from one of the recognized national certification organizations. Inputting patient medical data, including doctors’ notes and diagnoses, with an extremely high degree of accuracy are the main tasks. Medical billing professionals primarily input and submit payment and insurance data relating to medical care and procedures.
Data entry encompasses different job titles, but they all usually include inputting alphabetic, numeric, or symbolic data into a company's system from written or audio files using a keyboard and computer. Most legitimate companies hiring for this type of work hire people as independent contractors and not full-time employees. Data entry jobs are frequently the bait in work-from-home scams, so be sure to examine opportunities carefully. Never pay for kits or software.
Working at home can make you feel cut off from your co-workers. You are on your own. It is important to stay connected through your computer and telephone. Always be willing to send instant messages through Skype or whichever software your company uses. Stay available and do not ignore your co-workers when they message or email you, this goes both ways.
Everyone says you're a fantastic writer, so isn't it about time you got paid? Good writing is still in demand says Durst, especially for online content. For the best sites tryJournalismJobs.com,About.com seeks "Guides" in a broad area of topics, andMediaBistro.com. For blogging jobs, tryproblogger.net. If you have experience as a freelance copy editor, writer or proofreader, go toeditfast.com. Rates vary between $15 and $25 an hour.
Your Idea. It’s not enough to say that you’re going to offer an exercise classes. The people considering your classes will want to know exactly what they are going to get for their money, and it will be up to you to explain it concisely and effectively. Understand that you’re basically giving a sales pitch to potential attendees. You’ll have to really narrow down your topic.
Who can resist the dinging sound of a new email? You, that’s who, especially if you want to stay on task. And forget about signing in to Facebook “just for a minute.” It’s easy to get distracted when you telecommute—unlikely distractions that just don’t exist at work abound at home. At the office, for example, you might visit the company kitchen once in the morning and once in the afternoon for a cup of joe (because that’s what’s appropriate), but at home, you’re hitting the fridge every hour on the hour. Or more.

Many companies, such as J. Crew, Express Jet, 1-800-flowers, and even the IRS, outsource customer-service operations to third-party companies who then hire home-based workers or "agents" to take calls and orders. When you call 1-800-flowers, you may be speaking with Rebecca Dooley, a retired police officer and employee of Alpine Access, a major call-center service. When you dialed the number, your call was automatically routed to Rebecca's spare bedroom in Colorado.

The Mythbusting is much appreciated. It’s a gold rush out there. WWW might stand for wild wild west. This article frames up the challenges and reminds us that it’s the reality on the ground that gets us up the mountain. A similar myth is the one about writers and riches. I found a good article by an old fantasy novelist and reworked it into a post you might enjoy. http://ow.ly/a6pn3

Suzanne lives in Texas and has been a full-time freelance writer for 20 years. She’s written for numerous business and financial publications, both online and in traditional print media. She also owns her own small business and has a passion to help others achieve their dreams of financial independence. Her goal is to eventually work from a remote island that is equipped with Wi-Fi.
What It Is: What better way to alleviate your travel bug than to work as a remote travel agent or consultant? Whether part- or full-time, spend your working hours dreaming up itineraries, flight plans, hotels, and activities for clients looking to travel far and wide. Then, take advantage of your discounts (hey, perks of the job) and go wherever your heart desires, whenever your heart desires.
Wellbox provides care management services to practices and physicians, including Annual Wellness Visits, Telemedicine, and Chronic Care Management. They frequently hire Registered Nurses to work in a variety of roles, including Telehealth, Case Managers, and Coordinators. Wellbox offers both part-time and full-time employment and frequently allows employees to set their own schedules.
Work Space. When acting as a consultant, the probability is high that clients will be visiting your home office. Therefore, you need to have a neat, professional home office that is welcoming to guests. Try to locate your work space in a quiet, even secluded, area of the house. A converted garage space with its own entrance works well, giving you a private space for work and adding to your credibility.
Service. Another key aspect of successful B&Bs is the level of service that the hosts provide. You’re not just offering room and board, but an experience. If they need help planning a day seeing the sites, offer to sit down with them and help them plan their itinerary. If a businessperson needs copies for a presentation, offer to go and make them. Remember, your job as host will be to make your guests’ stays as comfortable and pleasurable as possible. If you succeed, they’ll remember you the next time they travel through your town.
The more oddball your stuff is, the more weird, or rare it is, the better it'll sell. This is exactly opposite if you sell on Amazon. With eBay, the rarer the items are, the more money you'll get, the faster it'll sell, and the more bidders will bid. Speaking of bidding, I never hold bidding auctions. I do buy-it-now with payment required now. Just save yourself the hassle of all the thousands of non-paying bidders out there wasting your time and set your items for buy-it-now. You can do best offer, but in my opinion, it's a waste of time. I always only got super low ball offers, like 10% of what I'm fairly asking and the ones that want to ask for less, don't need a best offer to do so, they email you anyway.
In an increasingly visual internet, website owners, bloggers, epublishers, video makers, and others need quality photos for their content. However, you don’t need to be a professional photographer to make money from your pictures. Quality photos from your smartphone are often good enough to sell online. Most stockphoto sites pay 15 to 60 percent of the sale of your photo, usually through PayPal.

By the way, a lack of contact information on a "make-money-from-home" site is a red flag. When there's no clear way to contact whomever is running the site, that is usually a pretty good indicator you're dealing with a scammer. Even if there is contact info, don't assume everything is okay. Check it out. If an address is listed, look it up on Mapquest or Google Maps. See if it really exists. If there's a phone number, call and find out who answers.

Stay connected. Make sure that you’re readily available via e-mail, phone, text, instant message, Skype and/or conference call, Hanna says. Taylor adds: “When in doubt, over-communicate until told otherwise. Don't forget that your lack of presence can be a negative if your boss is in the dark, especially in this high employment environment. While the best managers are looking for results, to some extent, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Be vocal about your activities and achievements while away from the office.”
