Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast in October 2012 while I lived in New York and juggled three jobs. Along with working at a restaurant and a news agency on nights and weekends, I spent my weekdays commuting from Brooklyn to a media company in Manhattan. When the hurricane made landfall, it crippled the city’s public transportation system for weeks, leaving me all but severed from office headquarters.
6. The Smart Crowd – The Smart Crowd is part of Lionbridge, providing their registered workers a pool of available microtasks – many of which revolve around data entry. User-friendly App: Decluttr is a mobile-ready platform made for selling on the go. The mobile app is a great help when you’re hunched over miscellaneous boxes in your dank basement or sweltering attic. You can use the app to scan in your items directly and utilize Decluttr’s “valuation engine” to quickly and easily see exactly how much you can earn. Many popular online selling platforms, including eBay and Amazon, are designed first and foremost with desktop and laptop users in mind.

That being said though, if you’re willing to step outside of your comfort zone, create value and work hard, there will always be a place for those type of people to succeed online. It’s often the people who want to make money online that approach it from a position of strength that ultimately succeed, trying to start a business out of a position of weakness and desperation is where I think a lot of people fail unfortunately.
"When I'm powering through my inbox, I need some intense and catchy rap/R&B (like Nicki Minaj or Miley Cyrus) blasting through my headphones, but when I'm writing, Tom Petty is the trick. Finding what music motivates and focuses me for different tasks (and then sticking to those playlists for those tasks) has completely changed my WFH productivity."
Think you don't have any unused gold items around the house? Think again! Chances are, you have a chain you haven't worn since high school, an old ring, or a broken gold necklace somewhere in your home. With gold prices at all-time highs, above $1,300 an ounce, selling old items containing gold is one of fastest ways to make a quick buck. BUT, you want to be sure you work with a reputable vendor.

What It Pays: Though it's completely subjective to the company, you'll likely be paid per post or hourly. Factors that could increase or decrease the pay scale include word count, research, interviewing an expert, and more. Many freelancers are full-time, but if you're looking for a side-hustle to make some weekend money, this is a great option too. According to Pay Scale, the average salary for a freelance writer is about $24/hr.
Food. The second word in “Bed and Breakfast” is just as important as the first. Some B&Bs have tried to serve their guests muffins, juice, and coffee in the mornings, but the most successful hosts understand that the breakfast they serve will make a lasting impression on their guests. You can get creative and serve the type of breakfast traditional for the area that you’re in. For instance, if your home is located in the South, then eggs, grits, and biscuits may go over well, while Southwest guests may appreciate a traditional Tex-Mex meal. Whatever you decide, make it memorable and make sure that your guests feel welcome and appreciated. Make it memorable, and they’ll spread the word for you.
Most of those “work from home” opportunities that you see on TV, in the newspaper, or online are scams or pay you so little for the time you’ve invested that it’s not worth your while.  In my quest to figure out a way to ditch the 9 to 5 job so that I could work from the comfort of my own home, I have come across many different opportunities.  Whether you want to work from home so that you have more time with your kids or because you’d rather wear your jammies instead of a suit, the following are some great ideas on how to earn your living by working from home.  I can’t promise you’ll get rich overnight or quickly earn enough to replace your salary, or that it will even be easy, but if you stick with it and keep trying you’ll eventually have achieved your goal.

We all sign up for subscriptions that we eventually don’t want. As I’m sure you have found out, sometimes cancellation isn’t so easy. What I love about Trim is that they will identify these recurring charges in your bank account, let you know what you are being charged for and then give you the option to have them cancel them. They can send an email, make a phone call or even send a certified letter if that’s what the company requires. This service is currently free. Trim can also negotiate things like your cable bill. For that service, they charge you a percentage of your annual savings. Sign up here.
Like Airbnb, becoming a ridesharing driver for companies like Uber, Lyft or Sidecar is a way to join the shared economy. And though it is not technically earning money from home,  it allows the same kind of flexibility and it is a way to use an asset you already own (i.e. your car) to make money. There are things to keep in mind, though, about driving other people such as whether your car insurance will cover you and how you pay taxes on your earnings.

The beautiful thing about a course is that you get about as much out of them as you put into them. If you want to do one course launch, make a few thousand bucks and walk away, you can do that. If you want to create multiple courses around a general topic and run an academy that you advertise through webinars, podcasts, blogs, and joint-ventures and build a lifestyle business from your home, you can do that too!

As more companies transition to a remote workforce, the number of virtual call center jobs increases. Often, experience in an office call center or even a retail job is enough to land a home-based call center job. If you speak more than one language, consider getting a bilingual call center job, which tends to have perks due to the additional knowledge needed.
Another option for a home-based writer is to work as a freelancer. "The problem with freelance writing for a living—and, for that matter, any freelance income—is that as soon as you finish a project, you're unemployed again," note Kate Lister and Tom Harnish in Undress for Success. "Good writers will spend at least as much time chasing work as they do words." So if you're going to be a freelancer, you'll need to be a good self-promoter as well. (Sites that connect freelance writers with clients include Guru.com, Odesk.com, and Elance.com.)
I actually just wrote my own blog post about this very idea. People think SEO is free, and while it’s true that you don’t have to invest in any software if you don’t want to (there are plenty of free tools available), you have to remember how many hours it takes to create a successful SEO campaign. Just optimizing your site can take several weeks. Link building could easily be 15-20 hours a month, a few hours a week is devoted to just straight writing (never mind promoting your content). You have to manage all your social profiles, build relationships with other bloggers and so forth. There are a lot of tasks that take up a lot of time each day and time = money!
"If I'm planning on working from home on a certain day, I'll make sure to get any work done ahead of time that requires me to be in the office -- for example, if I'm working on a task that would be infinitely easier to complete with access to my large monitor screen, or need to schedule meetings with coworkers that are best had in person. Plan out your week in advance to optimize for the environments you'll be in."
In the calm days following the storm, I woke up each morning, rolled across my sheets, reached for my laptop, logged into various tools — Google Chat, Basecamp, Trello — and got to work. My roommate would bring me coffee from the bodega, and I would not leave my bed until my shift ended (eight hours later), around which time I would shower and hike to a nearby bar for dinner. As the city fought to restore power, there was a candlelight afterglow wherever I walked. That first week I told myself, “I could get used to this.”

If you are working off your personal internet connection at home, chances are very high that it is slower than the one in an office. Therefore, do not clog it up with junk. If other people in the house would like to play online games or stream while you are working I recommend asking them not to. This is extra important if you use a remote connection and run queries or reports that require a large amount of bandwidth. A slow internet connection will kill your productivity and by extension your mood.
Suzanne lives in Texas and has been a full-time freelance writer for 20 years. She’s written for numerous business and financial publications, both online and in traditional print media. She also owns her own small business and has a passion to help others achieve their dreams of financial independence. Her goal is to eventually work from a remote island that is equipped with Wi-Fi.
Another legitimate work-at-home job is the "virtual assistant" (VA)—the telecommuting version of a secretary or administrative assistant. The job of a virtual assistant, like that of the VA's office-based counterpart, is "making the boss look good" by taking care of details. On any given day, a virtual assistant's duties might include proofreading, data entry, building a PowerPoint presentation, scheduling appointments, and sending out thank-you notes.
Skill. If you’re going to sew for other people, your skills need to be far above average. If you’re a beginner or an average seamstress, wait until you improve their skills before attempting to earn money in this type of business. If people are going to trust their wedding dresses or their favorite sports jacket to you, you must be able to handle them with care and the utmost skill.

Many home-based entrepreneurs minimize the initial financial stress by running their business part-time and keeping their day job to finance the venture, an arrangement that can work well for a while. "When you start to take vacation and sick days to work on your business, then you're probably busy enough to make the transition," Williams says. When you do, make sure you don't cheat yourself on benefits. If you aren't covered by a spouse's health insurance, you'll need to foot the bill for your own plan (a percentage of the cost is tax-deductible). And if you've been contributing to a 401(k) -- or even if you haven't -- talk to an accountant about setting up a personal retirement account, such as a SEP-IRA. Not only is this a savings vehicle, but it's like buying yourself a deduction at tax time.

Many people look for a job that will allow them to travel and see the world. Being a travel manager can make this possible for some people. Corporate travel managers spend their days coordinating airline flights, train rides and other modes of transportation for office personnel traveling both domestically and internationally. A large part of this job consists of visiting different websites to find the best deals for tickets for airlines, trains, buses, etc. Travel managers also filter through airline itineraries, travel websites and call around for discounts on the best travel deals. The wonderful part of this job is that all of these requirements can be done from the comfort of your home. The median salary in this profession is roughly about $85,000 a year according to salary.com. The better deals you can find for your clients, the more likely they are to use you in the future and refer you to others. The potential to make more than $80,000 is quite high.

Shipping costs these days can ruin a business. It generally costs about $10-$20 to send a box of something, depending on what it is. That snow globe you thought was worthless and it actually sold for $30, by time eBay is done with you, you will have only profited $7. It'll cost 16% in eBay/Paypal fees, about $10-$13 to ship it and another $5 in miscellaneous supplies.
Other reasons employees might want to work from home: there's no commute, no boss looming over your shoulder, no co-workers to interrupt you, and no dress code, says Lisa Kanarek, a home office expert, author and founder of WorkingNaked.com. But it can be difficult to go from a corporate office to a home office because there are no co-workers around, no support staff and no IT department to help you, she says.
