If you're a fast typist there are many ways to make money from home by typing. Some you need experience and training others you don't. Data entry, for instance, takes very little experience; however, if you aren't fast enough you won't make any money at. Specialty transcription work (like medical) may require a degree and experience to get started.
We all take breaks during the workday, and working from home should be no different. You may want to consider working in smaller spurts and allowing yourself to relax in between, which can be really refreshing and help you both physically and mentally. Getting up from your chair for a while at regular intervals can also help your eyes and spine relax.
Thank you for contributing such a wonderful post. As usual, you have conveyed a profound truth in simple language, that is, there is no substitute for hard work. Persistence pays, so never give up. And if one course does not work, take a detour. If your on-line business is not working, find another angle to work on it, but don’t give up. This is the message I got out of your write-up: a true inspiration. In your case, the hours and hours of struggle have paid off, so continue to educate us, your fans and readers. Wish you the best and three cheers to your success. Cheerio.

How to Get It: GoFluent.com is an English training company working with 12 of the world's largest corporations. This was weird. By and large, I don’t like people. You’ve been in offices. You’ve seen these people in offices: the guy who assumes you just asked about his fantasy football strategy and the woman who’s obviously stealing your chili from the breakroom fridge—which is totally messed up. (Seriously, we can smell the cayenne on your breath, Margaret.) Offices are sites of productivity, shared goals and socializing; they’re also fluorescent breeding grounds for dramas of the human condition… and for people with annoying ringtones.
1. AccuTran Global – AccuTran Global is mostly known as a transcription company, which is fair since that’s mostly what they bring on independent contractors to do. However, they sometimes have data entry jobs as well, so it’s best to keep your eye out. Check the link for my overview of the company, detailing what it’s like for their transcriptionists: it’s likely to share similarities to what they expect of data entry specialists.
Thank you for telling it how it actually is John, it’s refreshing to hear it that way and surprisingly motivating. I do believe that having enough of an income to support myself is more than enough compensation for escaping the ‘boss’ and having the freedom to provide value to your audience. Millions would be nice, but not essential for it to be worth it. I look forward to your webinar. 🙂
Marketing. When operating as a consultant, you won’t necessarily be marketing your company; you’ll be marketing yourself. You’ll have to “package” yourself in a way that makes people trust you. For instance, if you’re marketing yourself as a financial consultant, ask yourself why someone would trust you with their life savings, and then figure out a way to convey that to potential clients. It might be in the form of a brochure, a portfolio, a sales letter, or all three.
When you work in an office, you can ask your boss about the details of your upcoming presentation when you see her in the company kitchen. But if you telecommute, she’s just another email in your inbox. From letting her know if you’re going to miss a deadline or getting clarification on an email, you’ll have to be proactive about communicating all aspects of your job and any questions you might have with her.
Job Boards. When you’re first starting out, you’ll have to go looking for work, and the best place to do that is on one of the online job boards. Places like Guru, Elance, Freelancer, and oDesk are today’s writers’ best friends. They allow individuals and businesses to post projects, and freelancers to bid on them. Take a look around the sites, sign up for the free access in the beginning, and then begin to place bids on the projects that interest you. It will take some trial and error to find your groove, but once you do, the jobs will start to roll in.
In this increasingly digital world, there has never been a better time to work from home. At-home jobs are the perfect opportunities for those struggling to secure a local gig, need to stay home for health reasons, have to care for a loved one, or simply don't relish the thought of dealing with a hectic commute every day. FlexJobs reported in their The State of Remote Jobs survey that, as of 2017, 43% of U.S. workers now work remotely — even if it's just a part-time side hustle to supplement their income. For remote jobs, you'll need a computer, some basic skills, and a can-do attitude. Click through this list of remote employment areas that are booming right now, plus find even more ways to make money from home.
Another option for a home-based writer is to work as a freelancer. "The problem with freelance writing for a living—and, for that matter, any freelance income—is that as soon as you finish a project, you're unemployed again," note Kate Lister and Tom Harnish in Undress for Success. "Good writers will spend at least as much time chasing work as they do words." So if you're going to be a freelancer, you'll need to be a good self-promoter as well. (Sites that connect freelance writers with clients include Guru.com, Odesk.com, and Elance.com.)
When I wrote recently about delegating things to assistants, I was truly surprised by the blowback. Regardless, this is crucial, especially if you work from home, because it's easy to fall prey to the illusion that you have unlimited time, and can now do everything yourself. However, if you have a business worth doing, you can--and should--delegate things like managing your calendar, doing initial research, and handling household chores. (Yes, this can apply to child care, as well.)
Printables are ALL the rage right now! If you can come up with helpful printables and you're skilled at design — you can make good money from home by selling these digital downloads. Blogger, Sarah Titus started selling printables via Shopify, and her income has skyrocketed. Sarah publishes her Shopify income reports here. In July of 2018, she earned $474K in just one month from selling printables; crazy, right?!
Cambly is an online, foreign language, tutoring platform that lets individuals practice their language skills with a native speaker. There are always a ton of transcription jobs out there, and it’s one of the most commonly suggested gigs for work-at-home newbies. However, run-of-the-mill transcription also doesn’t generally pay that well. Where earning a respectable transcription income comes in is in specializing so that you can do more specific and sensitive transcribing quickly, accurately, and efficiently. Some transcription skills you can only get through transcription experience, but other skills may come from your background or require you to complete a certification course.
4. Clickworker – Clickworker allows you to sign up and become part of a pool of folks who complete tasks for Clickworkers’ clients. Data entry is one of those tasks, and others include proofreading, copy editing, web research, surveys, and more. Once you sign up (for free), you fill out your profile and complete short assessments to demonstrate your abilities. The number of jobs available to you depend on how well you perform, and providing excellent work means your earnings will increase. While many people start a home business to create or replace a full-time income, some people simply want to generate a little extra money to pay debt; save for a rainy day; or use as mad money, a sum of money reserved for small expenses or impulsive purchases. In the past, those who wished to make extra money needed to go out to find a second job. Fortunately, times have changed and people are thinking creatively about how to make extra money from home. They may be selling their services such as driving or shopping, skills such as writing or sales, or used items such as furniture, technology, or clothing to bring in extra income. Websites designed specifically to assist you in getting rid of unwanted items or selling your services or skills can help.

Anyone who has ever googled “work from home” or “make money from home” knows that the web is overflowing with sites proclaiming you can make thousands from the comfort of your living room, most of the time requiring you to first buy a book, CD, or DVD to learn how. Since there is so much of this garbage out there, it can be frustrating looking for legitimate ways to work from home. Below are some reasonable ideas to consider.
“You form a foundation where you’re making the right decisions from the start,” Reynolds said, instead of guessing about what your boss might want. As time goes on, you’re set up for success by processing a problem in a way you know your manager would approve of. Not only does that cut down on the emails you need to send, but it should also increase the trust between you and your supervisor.

Shipping. You will only have a few days to ship a book after it sells, and even less time if you agree to include two-day or overnight shipping as part of your options. And since you’ll want to save as much as you can on the shipping, you’ll have to devise a plan. Many people set aside specific days for shipping – say 3 days a week – and then make one big trip to the post office. As long as there isn’t anything else in the package, you can send books via media mail, which is the least expensive option. Finally, your books will need to be packaged in a way that they won’t get damaged in transit.
Now don’t beat yourself if you weren’t able to tick off everything in your to-do list. Sometimes we all tend to cram everything in a day even if we know it is unrealistic. So don’t be too hard on yourself. At the end of the day, celebrate your victories instead of dwelling on unfinished assignments, a lapsed deadline, or even failing to take your bath! Look at what you have achieved at the level of energy you mustered today. Then resolve to be better. After all, tomorrow’s another day – at home 🙂
When you start a remote job, you trade a lot more than an office cubicle for your desk at home. You’re also trading water cooler talk for peace and quiet, building-controlled thermostats for your own temperature preferences, and office drama for the thoughts in your own head. Many people would make those trades in an instant, but you also lose the closely-monitored office atmosphere, and need to start self-driving every aspect of your work. Here’s what that looks like day-to-day.
Goood tips here! I tried the "work at home" thing and the two biggest things that made me go back to work? Loneliness and discipline. I'm a pretty focused person, but with a "wide open" schedule, two things happened: I'd check FB too much AND I had no boundaries on my time. I'd answer emails at midnight, wake up late, "show up" in my pajamas. But you know, when I went back to work, it actually made my freelance writing fall into a more natural schedule. Now, I'm content: I still freelance, but it's because I have my work schedule to contend with. Slightly ironic, I know, but I found out that I'm not so good at the work-at-home thing - so great advice because discipline is the most important thing!
Some scams might involve asking you to pay for a “training” book or CD that explains how to make money in a certain business. Others charge for supposedly “exclusive” products that you’re supposed to sell at a premium. Avoid both of these scenarios. Remember, you should never have to pay to get a job. And if someone asks you to, you can be sure that it’s a scam.
Something else I recommend is taking the free 7-lesson mini-course on general transcription offered by Janet Shaughnessy of Transcribe Anywhere. This will help you to understand if you're a good fit for a transcription career, what you can potentially earn, and also where to get started. Janet also has free legal transcription mini-course if you're more interested in going that route.
Not necessarily new, but definitely a great opportunity! Jen Henson was a teacher in Ohio when she was approached by her principal to tutor an athlete preparing for ACT testing. He had a full ride offer from a college but need the test scores to seal the deal. After hearing about the results Jen was able to help this student achieve, he’s in the NFL today, she started being approached by other coaches.
Working mothers bring a diverse and powerful set of experiences that can contribute to a successful team in the workplace. Research shows that a team of people with different backgrounds and perspectives leads to lower costs, higher revenues and increased profits—which translates to delivering for our customers in a better way. One of the greatest joys of my career has been my experience working in so many parts of the business, from front-line customer support to process management and even branding. In moving across functions, I’ve been able to learn from colleagues who approach challenges, manage teams and create solutions in unique ways, giving me an ever-increasing appreciation of diverse perspectives.
Your Deals. In addition to establishing a per-class price, also offer packages to entice people to sign up for more than one class. For example, if you intend to host classes on making soap, offer the classes individually, as well as in a group. Someone could take a class learning how to use fresh flowers in homemade soap, or they could buy a bundle that teaches them how to use those, fresh herbs, and plastic toys for kid’s soap. However you decide to price your classes, remember that the buyer will want to feel like they’re getting a lot for their money. If you can provide that in a fun atmosphere, they’ll likely be back time and time again – and they’ll bring friends.
Save money on food. I recently joined $5 Meal Plan in order to help me eat at home more and cut my food spending. It’s only $5 a month and you get meal plans sent straight to you along with the exact shopping list you need in order to create the meals. Each meal costs around $2 per person or less. This allows you to save time because you won’t have to meal plan anymore, and it will save you money as well!
It’s often your manager’s job to point out where you’re excelling, and where you need to improve. You might even get that from a co-worker or two. When you’re at home, your cat can’t tell you when you’re missing the mark. You might not be much of a big-picture type of person, but every now and then you need to be able to self-evaluate your progress. What are your strengths and weaknesses, and how can you continue to grow in your role?
I started reading your e-newsletter since I found out about you from Mo Money Podcast. I love this content and I can tell you what my side hustle is that was not mentioned here. I have been a virtual translator via Upwork (freelancing platform). Since I’m originally from Japan, I started offering beginner to intermediate level translation last year. Since then, I have delivered over 6 dozens projects all satisfactorily. I like that each and every project is so unique and it really stimulates my brain and challenge myself to deliver high quality translation services. My hope is that one day when I get pregnant or want to stay home with my babies, I can just do this freelancing job and quit my 9-5 job. Upwork offers so many types of freelancing jobs other than translation, so I recommend to anyone who wants to capitalize their underutilized talents.
According to Undress for Success, many VAs work for real estate agents, doing tasks such as preparing listings, arranging inspections, maintaining a web site, and even helping agents build a presence on social networks such as Twitter and Facebook. Some VAs work for multiple clients. As you might imagine, this can create quite a time-management issue, so VAs must be excellent organizers. (To learn about becoming a Virtual Assistant, visit TeamDoubleClick.com and VIPdesk.com.)
Other reasons employees might want to work from home: there’s no commute, no boss looming over your shoulder, no co-workers to interrupt you, and no dress code, says Lisa Kanarek, a home office expert, author and founder of WorkingNaked.com. But it can be difficult to go from a corporate office to a home office because there are no co-workers around, no support staff and no IT department to help you, she says.
If you have a college degree and the skills to tutor students online in math, science, English or social studies, this job may fit you perfectly. Go toTutor.com—tutors who work for the company and have passed their probationary period earn $10 to $14 an hour. According to Durst, "Skype and other web interface tools are bringing English language instructors face-to-face with students from around the world." Tryispeakuspeak.com,openenglish.com to get started.
How to Get It: Begin with sites like UserTesting.com, YouEye.com and Userlytics.com. Register with multiple companies for opportunities to test as many websites as possible. Once you're in the system, you'll be emailed when testers are needed, and if you're one of the first to respond, expect to spend 15 to 20 minutes completing the test. Many sites require a microphone and/or webcam, which are built into most laptops—but if you need to buy one, they aren't expensive. The tester sites typically pay within a week or two via PayPal.
Working at home can become isolating, unless you make an effort to build your network and maintain relationships. This might be easier in a major metropolitan area with lots of networking opportunities and industry meetings. However even if you have to travel and use lots of virtual tools--LinkedIn is a great place to start--maintaining your network should be on your to-do list every day.
Do you have a degree in nutrition? I know Livestrong.com is hiring writers for their site through Demand Media Studios. DMS also hiring writers and editors for every other topic under the sun to be published on eHow.com and their numerous other web properties. You can make about $15 or more per article, and a few dollars for each article that you edit. You can work as much or as little as you want. Once you “claim” an assignment, of which there are tens of thousands, you have 7 days to complete it.
But once you’re in your home office—alone, every day—you might start to miss that collegial camaraderie. Since the UPS incident, I’ve reached out more to colleagues via IM and will post cute pics of my new puppy for my colleagues to see on Yammer. And when we’re on deadline, we even (gasp!) talk on the phone. It’s helped tremendously to make the disconnect not feel so severe. It’s a good balance between having peace and quiet when you need it and much-needed interaction with others, too.
Luckily, the traits that are necessary for success in working from home can translate to any career path — even if you decide to head back to an office at some point. “If you’re spending time developing them, they’re going to help you in your career as a whole,” Reynolds said. If you’ve always wanted to try working remotely, work on enhancing these skills. In the worst case scenario, it doesn’t work out, but you’ve still strengthened crucial career skills that will serve you in any work environment.
Cassidy Solis has served since September, 2012, as the Senior Advisor, Workplace Flexibility, for SHRM’s Effective and Flexible Workplace Initiative. She is responsible for growing When Work Works, a nationwide initiative that brings research on workplace effectiveness and flexibility into community and business practice, and for educating employers about effective and flexible workplace practices.
Companies need people with all different levels of technical ability to test out their websites, apps and social media offerings. Sign up with one of these website usability testing companies and take on quick jobs surfing the web and playing with new apps. It’s not a career, but it is an easy way to make extra money from home. The only thing to keep in mind is that this won't likely be a steady gig, just occasional. Learn more about website testing.
You absolutely have to be available for questions at all times. The general rule of thumb is that you want to respond to questions within 1 hour. I know it seems harsh, but if you call a company, do you want them to call you back next week? Or do you want help now? Because I guarantee you, they'll just go somewhere else, buy from someone else, and you lost the sale. Likewise, always be professional and polite. There are times where you'll wanna slap someone.
Another flexible non-phone option in the educational field is test scoring. There are a few reputable companies that do hire home-based workers to score everything from standardized tests to essays. Before you apply, you should know that ETS and Pearson (listed below) do require that you have certain qualifications and/or past teaching experience before they'll let you become a scorer. WriteScore on the other hand requires just a two-year college degree.
