I’m finding out very quickly that to make any money writing, you have to read, read, and then read some more, no matter how smart you feel you are on a subject, before writing your first sentence. A reliable high-speed Internet connect is a requirement, of course, to access the databases from which you’ll work. I also usually do laundry when I work from home and I set mini deadlines for myself corresponding to when I have to go downstairs to switch loads. If I'm working on an article, I tell myself I'll get to a certain point before the wash cycle ends. Then I set another goal for the dryer."
After quitting a 9 to 5 job you might be tempted to think that working whenever you have the time is a decent approach. It is far from it, though – give it time and you’ll see for yourself. Working haphazardly will only make you a lot of your valuable time you could actually use for doing something else. This is why you should establish a clear schedule. Of course, there are exceptions – in those cases, you may attempt to change your business hours, but try to have some guidelines in this respect.

Now don’t beat yourself if you weren’t able to tick off everything in your to-do list. Sometimes we all tend to cram everything in a day even if we know it is unrealistic. So don’t be too hard on yourself. At the end of the day, celebrate your victories instead of dwelling on unfinished assignments, a lapsed deadline, or even failing to take your bath! Look at what you have achieved at the level of energy you mustered today. Then resolve to be better. After all, tomorrow’s another day – at home 🙂
If you are working from home you do not have to commute to work. Commuting creates added stress to begin the day and adds it all back at the end of the day. Use this time gained to be more productive and energetic at work and use the additional free time to your benefit. While it is important to avoid distractions while working at home, it also makes things like child care and home maintenance easier.
I strongly want to work from home for the flexibility, my sanity, and my family. I can’t take working in a cubicle in an office environment anymore. Be sure to have your computer, phone, printer, and so on, down to files and paper clips, etc. Keep all of the necessities stocked and in working order. Be sure to check your inventory often, reviewing your needs weekly and restocking. Order from the Internet. It's more efficient and saves gas. Nothing interrupts a work day (or eats up valuable time) like running to the store for printer ink!
