Luckily, the traits that are necessary for success in working from home can translate to any career path — even if you decide to head back to an office at some point. “If you’re spending time developing them, they’re going to help you in your career as a whole,” Reynolds said. If you’ve always wanted to try working remotely, work on enhancing these skills. In the worst case scenario, it doesn’t work out, but you’ve still strengthened crucial career skills that will serve you in any work environment. 
Commuting sucks, and one big advantage of working from home is that you no longer have to deal with it regularly. But it's crucial to reclaim the time you used to devote to travel for something productive. For example, maybe use the first 30 minutes of your day to answer emails you didn't get to the day before and the last half hour to set long-term strategic goals and specific objectives for the next day.

(Thankfully, they're no longer televising Olympic hockey games in the middle of the workday. I'll have to work something out for the World Cup.) One winning strategy is simply to accept that you'll never be 100 percent productive. That makes it easier to be in control of your "mind-wandering" time at work, and keep it under control.

Remember that whether you're offering a service or selling a product, you'll need to market yourself to customers, complete the job, and then wait to get paid (30 to 90 days is standard in most industries). Did you know you could start a subscription for your knowledge that’s almost pure profit? With sites like SubHub, you can offer a monthly membership offering anything from meal plans to workout plans to crocheting patterns and beyond. The sky is the limit. You do need to provide new content on a consistent schedule to keep your customers happy. But if there is something your friends are always looking to you for new ideas, you may have an easy little side business on your hands.
I also recommend FlexJobs for finding more home data entry jobs. With that site, you can regularly search legitimate work at home jobs for data entry and other industries. Those lucky enough to speak more than one language have the option of becoming translators. Many companies hire work-from-home representatives to answer customer or client calls in another language. Besides verbal translation, fluent readers are needed to translate documentation, another job that can done at home. Being able to fluently speak two or more languages is the main skill set. As a bilinguist, you have double the chances of finding your dream work-from-home job; search for your gig using keywords in both languages.
Though work-from-home arrangements have become more popular in recent years, remember that doing so is a privilege, not an automatic right. That's why it's important to have a good attitude going in. Working from home isn't an invitation to slack off or sneak in movie matinees when you're supposed to be plugging away at your desk. Rather, it's an allowance that employers give to help people like you achieve a better work-life balance. Mess it up, and in a best-case scenario, you'll have that privilege revoked. In a worst-case scenario, you'll risk losing your job altogether.
Shipping. You will only have a few days to ship a book after it sells, and even less time if you agree to include two-day or overnight shipping as part of your options. And since you’ll want to save as much as you can on the shipping, you’ll have to devise a plan. Many people set aside specific days for shipping – say 3 days a week – and then make one big trip to the post office. As long as there isn’t anything else in the package, you can send books via media mail, which is the least expensive option. Finally, your books will need to be packaged in a way that they won’t get damaged in transit.

Being able to trade for a living successfully means reaching a level of excellence that most people will never achieve, no matter what career they choose. It’s the difference between being a movie extra and an Oscar-winning actor. Between playing in a pick-up football game in the park and being the Superbowl MVP. Between a weekend musician and a rock star.
Another flexible non-phone option in the educational field is test scoring. There are a few reputable companies that do hire home-based workers to score everything from standardized tests to essays. Before you apply, you should know that ETS and Pearson (listed below) do require that you have certain qualifications and/or past teaching experience before they'll let you become a scorer. WriteScore on the other hand requires just a two-year college degree.

Aren’t remote workers distracted all the time? This is the crux of a large debate throughout the civilian work world about the efficiency of remote workers. Some people assume remote workers are all stay-at-home parents who squeeze work in between screaming kids and trips to the grocery store. Others argue that without office distractions, remote workers are way more efficient. If you choose to explore remote work, prepare to meet both types in your new job(s).
Financially I always suggest having one year’s worth of income set aside before you start. This is not the bankroll that you will trade with, but money that you will use to pay your living expenses. Having this financial cushion will give you piece of mind, allowing you to begin your new career without the pressure of having to trade to “make the rent.”
The ability to communicate quickly and reliably is the most priceless attribute a remote employee needs to succeed. Update your manager or boss frequently. Most offices use some group chat service, like Slack, to communicate with each other during the day, and tools like Google Hangouts or Skype for video calls and meetings. Make sure they’re installed and you know how to use them, and make your presence known to your colleagues (especially your boss) when you are available and working.
How much will you make? I think my best month with Google AdSense was almost $5,000 over the last ten years. That amazing month blew my mind since it was actually near the beginning of my blogging journey. When you go from making zero to $5,000 in a month, that will rock your world. For me, it also got me even more excited because I knew there were other ways to monetize.
The challenge was: My work required travel all over the world, and that didn’t integrate so well with my life. I knew I wanted to keep growing in my career, but I also wanted to be home for all of the milestone moments with my family. I had two young children under age 3. I wanted to be home for bedtime. I wanted to take them to swimming lessons once a week. I wanted to carpool with my husband to work to catch up and enjoy simple moments together.
You absolutely have to be available for questions at all times. The general rule of thumb is that you want to respond to questions within 1 hour. I know it seems harsh, but if you call a company, do you want them to call you back next week? Or do you want help now? Because I guarantee you, they'll just go somewhere else, buy from someone else, and you lost the sale. Likewise, always be professional and polite. There are times where you'll wanna slap someone.

You should be proficient with computers, able to handle Internet, email attachments, and both downloading and opening files. You’ll be working independently, so you should have a high degree of self-discipline. They also expect their data entry specialists to work on multiple projects simultaneously while sticking to deadlines. U.S. citizenship is a requirement for the position.
That may mean joining a professional organization or simply meeting peers or former colleagues for lunch on a regular basis. You'll need to work hard to maintain the kinds of relationships you took for granted at the office. Why? Because everyone you know, both personally and professionally, is either a customer or a lead to a customer, so you can't afford to isolate yourself. "Home-based doesn't mean housebound," Parlapiano cautions. "You have to make an effort to get out to meet other people and to make yourself -- and your business -- known."
Obviously, I'm a huge fan of blogging, and here's why. First, you can write on any topic under the sun — so you'll always be working in a niche that you're passionate about and that you have experience in. Second, it only takes a couple of hundred dollars to get started (you'll need to purchase your domain name, web hosting, and a blogging theme). Third, you can monetize in a ton of different ways — which makes it easier to start generating money quickly.
Remembering or writing down passwords? That’s for the birds. Tools like Dashlane fill them in for you automatically. Want to send out electronically signed contracts? There’s an online tool for that. Want to schedule a meeting with 20 or more people? There’s an app that will match up their schedules and find times. There’s even a tool that connects and integrates those two tools I just mentioned, along with hundreds of other tools.
Whether you have a website or are still dreaming up ideas for a blog, you can also look into affiliate marketing. With affiliate marketing, you partner with brands and businesses within the content of your website. If you mention a product or service, you link to that produce or service using a unique affiliate code you received when you signed up for that particular affiliate program. From there, you’ll make money any time someone buys a product or service through your link.
Personally, I’ll back this up all day long. Freed from such minor daily tyrannies as showing my face at a certain time, minding my lunch breaks, looking busy, preparing for pointless meetings and making sure I left at 5:02 p.m. instead of 4:55 p.m., working from home enables me to empty my mind of several thousand cells of useless thought. This translates into general happiness and actual real-live productivity. I’ve gotten pretty used to writing at swim practice.
I can’t say that we’ve gotten rich off of it,  but it helps pay the bills.  It’s daily traffic rivals and surpasses that of established news media outlets in our market, and we’ve brought on board some award-winning journalists in recent years.  It’s also gotten us other opportunities over the years, such as press passes to concerts and sporting events, chances to test out new products or listen to unreleased CDs, and so on.
Dress as if you are expecting company. There are some schools of thought that say this is not necessary. However, I'm of the belief that you will not be as productive if you "appear" at work in your pajamas or your very casual yoga workout clothes. Wearing such comfortable clothes may sound great, but you could psychologically be too relaxed, too comfortable to give the attention to your work that it deserves. I need an edge or a certain amount of tension to function. Getting dressed helps to establish that edge. You don't need to dress as if you are going in to the corporate office, but you wouldn't entertain company in a robe or your smelly workout clothes, either, would you? Nothing dressy required (although some do dress "up"), just something nice.
