Another key aspect of successful B&Bs is the level of service that the hosts provide. You’re not just offering room and board, but an experience. If they need help planning a day seeing the sites, offer to sit down with them and help them plan their itinerary. If a businessperson needs copies for a presentation, offer to go and make them. Remember, your job as host will be to make your guests’ stays as comfortable and pleasurable as possible. If you succeed, they’ll remember you the next time they travel through your town.
While this is not technically “at home,” you can still earn great money without ever getting on the phone using your personal car, bike, or scooter to deliver food, give people rides, and even picking up groceries. The great thing about these companies is that it's also very flexible work. No one is telling you when to start and stop. You just do as much work as you can, when you can.

While a fee can be a sign of a scam, independent contractors are responsible for their own expenses.
For his part, Bloom has heard all of your “shirking from home” jokes. “Of the funny pictures that came up, most of them were very negative—naked-people cartoons, people juggling babies, people eating cookies and drinking beer. The public perception from Google Images is pretty dire,” he quips. The service hires assistants, who set their own hours, to help its users tackle tasks such as making calls to service providers, scheduling appointments, and finding the best prices for services and products. You get paid per task, starting at between $3 and $7.

For some people, work just has to be in an office, factory, store, or any other environment that’s separate from home. Even a second job would have to be in a separate place. For others, a home office is a welcome place for a secondary or even a primary job. If you’re one of those people, you have some unique opportunities, but you also have some very particular challenges of working from home.


Successfully working from home means exactly that: WORKING from your house. It takes focus, dedication, and perfecting the art of ignoring life’s little distractions—like your mailman, who only seems to ring the doorbell when you’re deep into a project, or the neighbors chatting it up outside your home office window. (OK, yes, those two things are happening to me right now, but look! I’m still writing…that’s focus, people.)

Another thing I recommend is having an accountability partner when you first get started working from home. Not everyone needs this. Me personally, I’m very good at motivating myself. I did most my college online, hold four certifications in fitness which I did all from home, and built a very successful personally training business online. It’s important to know you own strengths and weaknesses. I’m good at motivating myself, but I’m not good at getting out and meeting new people. That’s something I work on each week as it’s important with a client based job that you keep bringing in new people. To help myself with that, I take my kids to multiple activities plus go to different parks to meet people. I also have goal of starting a networking group in my area soon. Knowing what you are good at and what you need to work on will really help you succeed. If staying on track, working each day, and being productive is something you struggle with, ask for help! I have a few people I check in with a few time a week to see how their work has gone! Never be afraid to ask when you need help.
Set office hours. Make sure to create a time slot for each of the day’s activities. This helps with communicating to others when your work-time and play-time is, Hanna says. “If you have small children you may need to schedule your work around their naps or another caregiver’s schedule, so that you can have a good chunk of time to work uninterrupted.”
