So, in this post, I'm digging into the benefits of remote work. I had the opportunity to chat with Sara Sutton Fell, the founder of Remote.co, 1 Million For Work Flexibility and FlexJobs, a job-hunting site for professionals seeking remote employment. Whether you're a business owner, employee or freelancer, here are the five key reasons Sutton Fell says working remotely (and/or taking remote jobs) might be the lifestyle choice that works best for you.
Do you love the thrill of the hunt? Or perhaps you have gently used gear and items that you no longer need? Then consider selling them on one of the many online selling platforms. From my own reselling experience, children's clothing, toys, baby gear, furniture, electronics, and high-end designer items tend to do best. I've also found that I earn more selling outright to an individual than when I go through a third-party platform like ThredUp or Gazelle.

You might be desperate for work, but don’t necessarily jump at an opportunity that sounds too good to be true. In my article about common Craigslist scams, I wrote about fake employers who “hire” new employees, then “accidentally” send them too much pay. They’ll ask their victims to wire back the difference, but a few weeks later, when the bank discovers that the initial check is a fraud, the “employee” is on the hook for hundreds, sometimes even thousands of dollars. If a job offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
More scams. According to the Federal Trade Commission, other common work-at-home scams are related to medical billing ("There's a severe shortage of people processing medical claims!"), envelope stuffing ("For a small fee, we'll tell you how you can earn money stuffing envelopes at home!"), and assembly and craft work ("You can assemble products at home in your spare time!"). In each case, the only one making any money on these deals is likely to be the scammer, who happily accepts your sign-up fee and the money you send in for a "start-up kit"—and then disappears.

Just make sure you’re comfortable enough to spend a lot of time with it. Most clients will request that you submit your work as a Microsoft Word document, so make sure that whatever programs you use are compatible. In addition, because you’ll be spending so much time at the computer, make sure that you have a good work area with proper lighting. Some clients will want to be able to reach you by phone or Skype, so have both set up and accessible. You’ll need an invoicing program, such as Freshbooks, and a good bookkeeping system to keep track of sales, orders, and accounts receivables.

Some people advise dressing as if you were still working in someone else's office. When you start a remote job, you trade a lot more than an office cubicle for your desk at home. You’re also trading water cooler talk for peace and quiet, building-controlled thermostats for your own temperature preferences, and office drama for the thoughts in your own head. Many people would make those trades in an instant, but you also lose the closely-monitored office atmosphere, and need to start self-driving every aspect of your work. Here’s what that looks like day-to-day.
