Another common one? It's called the Secret Shopper scam. You get a letter or see an ad or e-mail saying you can be a secret shopper, shopping different stores, acquiring different products for a company. Sounds simple right? It's starts out that you receive a check in the mail from the company you're supposedly doing services for, and "working for."
Before you really roll up your sleeves and monetize your personal or professional skills, why not right-size your life? Selling your unwanted stuff is a great way to downsize and declutter your life while earning some income on the side. If you’re transitioning to full-time work-at-home status, that income could provide a critical boost to your plans for a proper home office, or allow you to maintain your lifestyle during lean times without resorting to voluntary simplicity.
"From my personal experience in starting and running FlexJobs as a remote company, I have been keenly fascinated with the development of culture in this kind of environment while keeping in mind that the first company I started, JobDirect [which was acquired by Korn|Ferry International in 2000] had a traditional on-site office. I’m proud of both cultures we created, but I think that the remote environment has been uniquely conducive to more adaptability and integration with busy life stages, such as motherhood. I saw an opportunity with the similar conversations we were having with other remote-heavy companies on Remote.co, and so we started to look at the percentage of women in leadership in remote companies over the last few years. What we found was that remote companies consistently have far more women in leadership roles, especially at the CEO and C-level positions, than traditional companies. After finding this interesting (and exciting!) difference, we decided to ask the women leading these companies why they think that might be—and yes, it very much comes down to a better overall culture dynamic at remote companies. Specifically, these companies do a better job of offering flexible work options to all their workers, which helps both women and men better balance their work and personal responsibilities. For women, who tend to handle the bulk of caregiving responsibilities (for children, elderly parents, etc.), this sort of flexibility means making far fewer trade-offs and better handling conflicting responsibilities."
I knew about this post already because I was on your “private” webinar and signed up for your course. I am really looking forward to getting rolling with you! I know you’re moderating these comments so if you do allow this to go public I would say to anyone who reads this, who is signing up for the webinar to ABSOLUTELY sign up for your course!! It is a very much needed service to a lot of people searching for answers to how to do it right online (no I don’t get paid for that). Thanks for your always informative and straight shooting insights.
Technology has taken us all by storm. We can shop, communicate with friends and family, play games, and educate ourselves, all from a PC. In the past 25 years alone, we have gone from the giant Zack Morris cell phone to the sleek and compact smartphone – communication devices are designed with convenience in mind. Technology has made significant changes in how we network, we can quickly make global business connections, and clients can see our faces without a face-to-face meeting. Companies can allow employees to access necessary systems from a home computer. This has opened up the door for a whole new way of doing business: telecommuting.
After quitting a 9 to 5 job you might be tempted to think that working whenever you have the time is a decent approach. It is far from it, though – give it time and you’ll see for yourself. Working haphazardly will only make you a lot of your valuable time you could actually use for doing something else. This is why you should establish a clear schedule. Of course, there are exceptions – in those cases, you may attempt to change your business hours, but try to have some guidelines in this respect.

Need more ideas on how to make money online? Another strategy is using webinars to market your product, service, or course. I’ve done webinars to promote my financial planning practice and to drum up interest in my online course for financial advisors. With a webinar, you’re basically offering a lot of tips and advice for free — usually in a live format. At the end though, you pitch your paid product or service with the goal of securing a few deals.
What is remote work? Remote work is simply a job that you do from home, instead of at a workplace or an office. You communicate with co-workers and supervisors via telephone, Internet video conference and email. Generally the work is done on a computer – transcribing, managing websites or social media, analyzing data and producing reports, resolving customer complaint tickets, and the like.
Find out how your coworkers communicate best virtually and stay in touch with them. Don’t just talk about what you’re working on, but ask them about their weekend, their kids, their day. Communication tools like Slack have made this super easy. IM and team chats don’t require the same formality as emails sometimes do. Have video meetings as much as you can—it can be a big communication help to see someone’s facial expressions as you’re speaking to them.
It's the same idea for why some people work better when they have very busy schedules -- you learn how to manage your time VERY efficiently. The 'distraction' of my daughter (I mean that in the most loving way possible) means I can't possibly succumb to some of the other common distractions of home -- putting in a load of laundry, turning on the TV, doing other household chores -- or else I'd never get any actual work done."
As an executive at a leading financial services and technology company with two young children, I’m often asked how I maintain a balanced personal and professional life. The answer is simple—I don’t. After many hours of self-reflection, conversations with friends and family, and debates with my husband, I’ve found a recipe for success with life-work integration rather than work-life balance. For me, it’s not about striving for a perfect balancing act but rather integrating across all aspects of life so you can bring your whole self to everything you do.
How many times have you told your friends about a great service or product you love? Could you have been compensated for that referral? Many companies today have refer-a-friend programs that will pay you in cash or store credit for bringing them new customers. Look in your online profile for these opportunities. The website will often provide you with a link you can share on social media or in an email. If it’s a product or service you are asked about a lot, it may even be worth your time to get cards printed up with your link for handing out.
Remembering or writing down passwords? That’s for the birds. Tools like Dashlane fill them in for you automatically. Want to send out electronically signed contracts? There’s an online tool for that. Want to schedule a meeting with 20 or more people? There’s an app that will match up their schedules and find times. There’s even a tool that connects and integrates those two tools I just mentioned, along with hundreds of other tools.

If you have an eye for color schemes and website layout, pick up CSS, HTML, JavaScript, and other programming languages so you can do full-on website development for private clients. If you’ve always wanted to work on apps, learn C++, C#, Objective-C, and HTML5 (among others), depending on the platform or device you’d like to design for (Apple, Windows, Android). SQL, Java, and Python are also great languages to have experience in if you’d like to work in software development in general. Like freelance writing, you can get experience on the job and increase your rates (or salary expectations) as you complete projects or add more practical experience and earned certifications to your skillset.

If you find yourself working earlier, take time for yourself and your family later. (Personally, I have ghostwriting clients all over the world, and it's a lot easier to do the occasional 4 a.m. overseas Skype call from my home office.) At the same time, it's great to do errands during low-demand hours. Don't fight the crowds at the mall on a Saturday. Instead, discover the tranquility of 10:30 a.m. on a Tuesday.
When you take breaks during the day take walks or do physical activity. If you worked in a physical office you would take breaks with co-workers and chat at the water cooler, when you are working at home you should do the same. You can also invest your additional time saved by not commuting into your health. Working at home is a modern convenience. If you approach it with the right attitude it can enhance your career and improve all areas of your life.

Some scams might involve asking you to pay for a “training” book or CD that explains how to make money in a certain business. Others charge for supposedly “exclusive” products that you’re supposed to sell at a premium. Avoid both of these scenarios. Remember, you should never have to pay to get a job. And if someone asks you to, you can be sure that it’s a scam.
Shipping costs these days can ruin a business. It generally costs about $10-$20 to send a box of something, depending on what it is. That snow globe you thought was worthless and it actually sold for $30, by time eBay is done with you, you will have only profited $7. It'll cost 16% in eBay/Paypal fees, about $10-$13 to ship it and another $5 in miscellaneous supplies.
Great article. When I decided to go into online marketing I went into it with open eyes. I had great expectations and dollar signs in my eyes. I was going to be a millionaire in two years. Then reality set in. But I love this business and I’ll keep plugging away. I may never get “rich” but I love what I’m doing and always learning something new and that to me is what rich is all about.
Dress as if you are expecting company. There are some schools of thought that say this is not necessary. However, I'm of the belief that you will not be as productive if you "appear" at work in your pajamas or your very casual yoga workout clothes. Wearing such comfortable clothes may sound great, but you could psychologically be too relaxed, too comfortable to give the attention to your work that it deserves. I need an edge or a certain amount of tension to function. Getting dressed helps to establish that edge. You don't need to dress as if you are going in to the corporate office, but you wouldn't entertain company in a robe or your smelly workout clothes, either, would you? Nothing dressy required (although some do dress "up"), just something nice.
Working from home isn't new, of course. Family farms have been around as long as the human race has existed. More recently, European merchants of the Middle Ages often had their shops on the first floor of their houses, and their living quarters upstairs. In the 18th and 19th centuries, women often were engaged in cottage industries involving sewing and spinning.
Call Center QA hires Telephone Mystery Shoppers from the US. To get started, fill out their simple online application. You do not need experience, but you must be at least 18 years of age. Each call takes about 5 – 10 minutes, and a few minutes to complete the feedback form. You'll earn $5 per each completed call, and they pay out in 7 business days or less.
Experience. Whatever area you want to work in as a consultant, you must be able to show clients that you’re qualified to advise them. If there are organizations related to your field, make sure that you’re a member of them. Similarly, if you can take a course and become certified or registered in your field, do it and then add that to your credentials.
I signed up with Demand Media Studios and was accepted, but I haven’t done much since. The number of assignments available and is somewhat overwhelming, but I could easily earn the equivalent of a 9 to 5 salary by writing articles every day.  I’ve written for many, many blogs and websites over the years about everything from lawncare to nursing school and mobile phones.  There are topics, such as new technology, that I consider myself to be well-versed in and there are others that I am not that familiar with, so I do a lot of research to write well about them.

4.  Be flexible, boundaries may need to change. Working parents may need to shift their boundaries (move a working dinner to a working lunch, put in time after addressing her family or child care needs), but they have a high capacity and efficiency to get the job done.  Support these shifts knowing that you are exhibiting trust and support for this highly valuable work sector.

Both highly ranked by BBB. Both highly ranked by BBB. They list charts on their websites for what you pay and very clear thorough instructions of how to go about sending in your gold. Important thing: they pay for and insure your shipping. You send them the gold. They value it. Let you know. And you have the option to sell it to them, OR to have your gold returned. Usually gets shipped in the same day.

Something else I recommend is taking the free 7-lesson mini-course on general transcription offered by Janet Shaughnessy of Transcribe Anywhere. This will help you to understand if you're a good fit for a transcription career, what you can potentially earn, and also where to get started. Janet also has free legal transcription mini-course if you're more interested in going that route.

At work, you had to keep your desk neat so that you looked organized—and sure, it’s always helpful to see the top of your desk. But at home, who cares if clutter collects around you? Well, don’t fall into that trap (especially video conference calls are part of your routine). While you might miss the building services team, who used to wipe down your crusty keyboard and empty your waste paper baskets every night, it’s ultimately up to you to keep your space spic and span so you can do your best work.
When I started to work from home, I missed talking to people. A lot. But I soon found a friend. Every day, I would hear the UPS guy gunning his motor as he drove down my long driveway to deliver my packages. As soon as I would spot him, I’d fly out of the house and chat him up. And now he leaves the packages by the curb. Sure, the one big bonus of working from home is that it gets you away from the petty office politics and never-ending gossip.
Now don’t beat yourself if you weren’t able to tick off everything in your to-do list. Sometimes we all tend to cram everything in a day even if we know it is unrealistic. So don’t be too hard on yourself. At the end of the day, celebrate your victories instead of dwelling on unfinished assignments, a lapsed deadline, or even failing to take your bath! Look at what you have achieved at the level of energy you mustered today. Then resolve to be better. After all, tomorrow’s another day – at home 🙂
If you have the skills you need to work from home, scope out the best scam-free resources to help you find jobs that are a good fit. Of course, FlexJobs is the premier source for avoiding job scams in your search for hand-screened, home-based jobs that are 100% real and legitimate. Many of the jobs below can be done on a part-time, flexible schedule, or freelance basis.
Think long and hard before shelling out any money: Some work-at-home jobs will require you to purchase materials or equipment to get started, and while that doesn’t mean they’re not legitimate, it should be a red flag. If you are asked to pay for equipment, make sure you understand what you’re buying, and from whom. Also ask about the return policy for your equipment if your new gig doesn’t work out.

If carving out time to work is difficult, then knowing when to stop can be harder still. If you find yourself working on weekends, checking e-mail in the wee hours, and hauling your laptop to soccer games, force yourself to stop: You're on the path to burnout. You'll also lose credibility with your family. Who, after all, will believe that your home-business plan was conceived with your family in mind if you spend all of your time working? Remember to keep the focus on your ultimate goals: You want a business of your own, but you also want a family life.

It’s fairly easy to build your own website if you take advantage of the many free learning opportunities online. However, much of the population isn’t equipped to build their own site, or doesn’t have the time, which is why so many people make a living building websites and blogs for others. According to the BLS, around 16% of web developers were self-employed in 2016, with the vast majority able to work at home, or anywhere with a laptop and speedy Internet connection.

Digital Marketing & Communications Manager – Communication Service for the Deaf is hiring a Communication Manager to lead the development and deployment of digital marketing and communications of all of CSD’s Strategic Initiatives program, which includes but not limited to CSD Social Venture Fund, its business partners and other strategic initiatives as identified by the leadership team. You've heard this one before, but it's crucial. Carve out a dedicated space that you only use for work. Preferably, you need natural light and a door, so that you can separate your work from your home life when the workday is done. (Moreover, creating a separate and exclusive space can be necessary if you want to take a tax deduction for a home office.)
If you love to find bargains and can’t get enough of the clearance aisles, then selling on Amazon may be for you! Jessica from TheSellingFamily.com was able to take her love of finding deals and turn it into a 6-figure side hustle in just 1 year. You can grab a free 7 day email course right here and she will explain everything you need to know about how it all works and help you decide if it’s the right choice for you. (I think this is one of the EASIEST jobs stay at home moms can do with no experience!)
If you are working off your personal internet connection at home, chances are very high that it is slower than the one in an office. Therefore, do not clog it up with junk. If other people in the house would like to play online games or stream while you are working I recommend asking them not to. This is extra important if you use a remote connection and run queries or reports that require a large amount of bandwidth. A slow internet connection will kill your productivity and by extension your mood.
