Typically reps make a small investment to get started (this is a legitimate and standard practice), and sometimes pay a fee for the merchandise being sold. After that you can work as much or as little as you want, and see profit based on how much you sell.

In the worst case scenario, it doesn’t work out, but you’ve still strengthened crucial career skills that will serve you in any work environment. 

Research Pricing (And Set Fair Starting Prices): Before setting prices for each item, research your local Craigslist website and (if possible) nearby yard sales to get a sense of how to price them. Remember that many buyers will try to haggle – so set prices a bit higher than your bottom dollar, but not so high that you’ll scare off first bids. 10% to 15% is a good rule of thumb. Consider bunching low-value items, such as old CDs, into lots of five or 10, or offer x-for-$y deals.
Great post and all, but is it possible to make money from a blog without teaching people how to blog? Seems like most of the money making blogs out there make money from affiliates for starting a to blog! Making Sense of Cents is one that comes to mind. Make it memorable, and they’ll spread the word for you.

“You form a foundation where you’re making the right decisions from the start,” Reynolds said, instead of guessing about what your boss might want. As time goes on, you’re set up for success by processing a problem in a way you know your manager would approve of. Not only does that cut down on the emails you need to send, but it should also increase the trust between you and your supervisor. 

Kanarek says if you’re not taken seriously, it’s important to let friends and family know that although you’re working from home, you’re still working. And if you’re feeling lonely or unmotivated, work from a coffee shop or a restaurant a few hours a week. “While you may not interact with anyone, being around others can motivate you to work,” Kanarek says.

Once you register with their site, you can select HITs (Human Intelligence Tasks) that sound interesting to you; sometimes, you must complete a qualifier to land the task. You’re only paid if your work is accepted. There can be some shady tasks listed on mTurk, so be careful and don’t pick up any HITs that feel wrong. Payment is made via Amazon gift cards or through bank deposit.

I'm the same way with my art, actually. When I have to make art for money, it's no fun. When I create it out of love, it's such a thrilling process.
