You can find more information on how to make a living on eBay as well as other sources of how to make a living from home on my blog. I have been fortunate to be able to be a single stay-at-home-mom, and I wish all the best to you as well in your endeavor to work from home. In our economy and the way things are going, this will become more and more possible as the years go on. There are so many things you can do to work from home and earn legitimate money to help your family. eBay is but one way.
Great post Carly! I am in the same boat without as you with going back to work after having a baby. My husband and I decided it’s best that I stay home. I am blogging as well and hope to contribute to my family financially as well. ITs so nice to hear of someone’s success blogging so close to home (I’m from Saskatchewan) it gives me the fire to keep keep going!
3. Birch Creek Communications – BCC periodically looks for people to do data entry; when they do, they’re looking for independent contractors just like everyone else. Pay is by the job and your performance, with their uppermost pay range going to those with consistent near-perfect accuracy. You can set whatever schedule you wish with them, but it looks like work is most widely available Monday through Friday on a corporate schedule.
When it comes to at-home income, selling your unwanted stuff is the definition of “low-hanging fruit.” Even if you’re resolutely intentional in your purchasing habits, you surely have possessions that you can do without: old kids’ clothing and toys, disused sporting goods, out-of-fashion wardrobe accessories, electronics, entertainment, valuable but non-sentimental keepsakes such as watches and jewelry, broken-in furniture, dusty tools and outdoor equipment, and perhaps even big-ticket items like a motorcycle or second car.
The bottom line: Remote work is not an excuse to get up late, work in your pajamas and enjoy freedom from responsibility. It is, however, a viable career option that permits you to avoid cubicle life and long commutes, options when arranging your work schedule, and the comforts of your own home/office/favorite cafe. As long as the pay is enough for your needs, remote work can be a pleasant, productive and rewarding career.

Working from home can be tough, but anyone can be successful as long as they try and put in the work! I have seen people have crazy hardships come their way, yet they didn’t let that stop them! I have seen people withe very reason to quit, refuse to, and succeed instead! I myself struggle most days as I suffer from an autoimmune disease and am sick quite often….yet I let that drive me to succeed in order to show people, nothing can stop you if you are determined!

Automattic’s employees design their own days, determining what hours work best for them. The key, Rosso says, is making sure they’re predictable and consistent. “We have some people who work the weekends,” she says, “But they set that expectation of when they’ll be available. Our teams can adjust to that.” As such, they’re used to asynchronous communication—the idea that your question might not be answered immediately.
Getaround and Turo are the sharing economy's answer to rental agencies. With Getaround, for example, you can rent out your car on an hourly or daily basis. You set the price, depending on the your vehicle's market value, and the company takes a 40 percent cut to cover 24/7 roadside assistance and driver insurance. Earning potential: From $300 to $10,000 a year
Set aside a specific area or room of your home as your office. When you move into that space, this becomes a subconscious signal that it is time to work. The same applies once you've finished for the day. Move out of that space, or clear away your work material if the space serves another purpose. Your brain is better able to"turn on" or "turn off" the work day when your work space is distinct.
Goood tips here! I tried the "work at home" thing and the two biggest things that made me go back to work? Loneliness and discipline. I'm a pretty focused person, but with a "wide open" schedule, two things happened: I'd check FB too much AND I had no boundaries on my time. I'd answer emails at midnight, wake up late, "show up" in my pajamas. But you know, when I went back to work, it actually made my freelance writing fall into a more natural schedule. Now, I'm content: I still freelance, but it's because I have my work schedule to contend with. Slightly ironic, I know, but I found out that I'm not so good at the work-at-home thing - so great advice because discipline is the most important thing!

At that point, you're supposed to deposit the check into your bank account. You're told to spend part of that money shopping at specific stores, then to wire back the leftover cash. Which you do. And then you find out from your bank that the initial check was a fraud. When the check bounces, you're responsible for whatever real money you wired back. Even worse, if you don't have enough in your account, you're now on the hook to the bank.
4.  Be flexible, boundaries may need to change. Working parents may need to shift their boundaries (move a working dinner to a working lunch, put in time after addressing her family or child care needs), but they have a high capacity and efficiency to get the job done.  Support these shifts knowing that you are exhibiting trust and support for this highly valuable work sector.
Fortunately, over the past 10 years, there's been a vast increase in the number of networking options available to home-based entrepreneurs. Priscilla Huff, for instance, uses a community room at a local bank to host an annual meeting of local businesswomen. The event gives work-at-home moms the chance to meet, exchange business cards, and create relationships and alliances that can help them build their business. It's easy enough, Huff says, to organize a similar event in your own community. She also recommends tapping into one of the Women's Business Development Centers, which are partly funded by the Small Business Administration, for advice and access to networking opportunities.
If carving out time to work is difficult, then knowing when to stop can be harder still. If you find yourself working on weekends, checking e-mail in the wee hours, and hauling your laptop to soccer games, force yourself to stop: You're on the path to burnout. You'll also lose credibility with your family. Who, after all, will believe that your home-business plan was conceived with your family in mind if you spend all of your time working? Remember to keep the focus on your ultimate goals: You want a business of your own, but you also want a family life.

10. Working Solutions – Working Solutions periodically offers work that involves data entry. In order to work with them, you’ll need to fill out an online application and follow it up with taking some assessments. They’ll contact you afterward – their website says this step can take up to 2 weeks – with acceptance or rejection. Once you’re an agent, you will have the opportunity to review and put yourself forward for programs you think match your skills. Each program pays differently, and payment is made either via direct deposit or mailed check.
You must be at least 21 years old, have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the U.S. (three years if you’re under 23 years old), have a valid driver’s license and pass a background check. Also, your car must be a four-door, seat at least four passengers (excluding the driver), be registered in-state and be covered by in-state insurance.

Most of us love the idea of earning extra income or quitting our full-time jobs altogether and working from home. If you thought work-from-home companies were just running scams, it turns out there are plenty of authentic and reliable ways to make money by working from home. Christine Durst, cofounder of RatRaceRebellion.com and consultant to the FBI on internet scam issues tells us, "There is currently a 61-to-1 scam ratio among work-at-home job leads on the internet—that is, for every legitimate job, there are 61 scams." But, there are a lot of opportunities for a "real job." The secret is knowing how to separate the scams from what's legit.

Thanks for the comments. Ironically, this post showed up in my RSS about 10 minutes after I asked myself why I was not getting the conversions I expected. If nothing else, it was encouraging. I get several thousand hits to my blog each year. My problem is that I get hits from all over the nation and my industry (health insurance) requires a state license. I can only offer general advice to people in Califonia. In order for me to earn any money, my prospects have to live in one of the states in which I am licensed and have a competitive product. I have tried advertising on Facebook for hits in my state but have been underwhelmed. I need more state specific hits. Does Google advertising work or would you have another idea for building state specific readership.

I have been a member on Inbox Dollars for over 2 years. It is legit and they do pay. Once you reach their payment limit ($30) you can request payment and they will send you a check, usually takes about 2-3 weeks because they cut the checks on certain days of the month. I use the app, the search engine, do the surveys and print the coupons and get compensation for all of that plus more.
Keep in mind, however, that there is a "cost of doing business." In direct sales, that cost is likely to include the purchase of kits, catalogs, and product samples. You might even be required to maintain an inventory of products. So be sure you understand the cost commitment, not just the profit potential, before you sign on the dotted line. (Also realize that you assume some legal liability in becoming a product distributor, as explained in this Consumer Alert from the Federal Trade Commission.)

Diligence. In this industry, the line between scams and honest businesses is blurry, so you need to do your homework before accepting a position. Call the Better Business Bureau in your area to find out if there have been any complaints filed against the company, and do an online search on their name. Alpine Access is a well-respected company in the field, and Call Center Careers is a great place to look for legitimate call centers looking to hire.
I signed up with Demand Media Studios and was accepted, but I haven’t done much since. The number of assignments available and is somewhat overwhelming, but I could easily earn the equivalent of a 9 to 5 salary by writing articles every day.  I’ve written for many, many blogs and websites over the years about everything from lawncare to nursing school and mobile phones.  There are topics, such as new technology, that I consider myself to be well-versed in and there are others that I am not that familiar with, so I do a lot of research to write well about them.

I strongly want to work from home for the flexibility, my sanity, and my family. I can’t take working in a cubicle in an office environment anymore. I need and want something different and I need to act now. Thank you for giving me insight on the job market. I appreciate it and will definetely check these opportunities out and get a job asap. Thank you once again.
The Federal government saw a 421 percent increase in the incidence of telecommuting from 2005 to 2012. The Telework Enhancement Act of 2010 set guidelines for telecommuting eligibility requirement and also set tracking and reporting standards. Sell baked goods. Working parents might not have the time to whip up a birthday cake or cupcakes for school parties. That’s where you come in if you can create tasty baked goods. A friend of mine who is a single mom started making cupcakes as a way to keep herself occupied while staying with her dad when he was undergoing chemotherapy. She posted a picture of her cupcakes on Facebook and instantly received several orders from friends. Now she makes about $200 a month making cupcakes for others who hear about her through word of mouth or see pictures of her cupcakes on her Facebook page.
Those lucky enough to speak more than one language have the option of becoming translators. Many companies hire work-from-home representatives to answer customer or client calls in another language. Besides verbal translation, fluent readers are needed to translate documentation, another job that can done at home. Being able to fluently speak two or more languages is the main skill set. As a bilinguist, you have double the chances of finding your dream work-from-home job; search for your gig using keywords in both languages.

Kanarek says if you’re not taken seriously, it’s important to let friends and family know that although you’re working from home, you’re still working. And if you’re feeling lonely or unmotivated, work from a coffee shop or a restaurant a few hours a week. “While you may not interact with anyone, being around others can motivate you to work,” Kanarek says.
Best article I’ve read in a long time. I’m be traveling to Kiev on Monday so I’ll miss your webinar – but I’m sharing this with lots of folks who should listen in. Your point on technology is SO important. We learned way more than I ever thought we would on front-end, back-end and everything in between. There are so many people out there willing to build you a website – it’s important to know what you’re getting and what you own and that it’s original work. It’s amazing how many people don’t know how important these issues are. Thanks Jon for the inspiration this morning.

Appointment setters work with their company’s sales team to organize in-person appointments. The appointment setter has access to team calendars and arranges schedules for customer interactions. Customer service skills are a high priority, as inbound calls made to schedule appointments can range from curious sales inquiries to vital business arrangements.
Thank you for leaving that comment. It is so true that, like you, I think that one of the biggest reasons that anyone fail working from home is that they lack the discipline to allot the proper amount of time to getting the job done, whatever the job is. Unless those hours have been set for you by some outside entity, its a real push to give the time that it takes to be successful working from home. The distractions get in the way. Take care.
