In efforts to reduce costs, many companies across many industries hire employees and contractors to work from home. Between 2005 and 2012, the commonality of telecommuting increased dramatically. According to a publication by Global Workforce Analytics, for-profit companies saw an increase of over 70 percent, and not-for-profit saw an increase of over 87 percent in the incidence of telecommuting during that seven-year time frame. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, when people heard about telecommuting jobs, they would often associate them with either mail-stuffing jobs in which the pay was minuscule or in some cases, with scams.

“In a remote work environment, there is a need to really be an independent worker,” Reynolds said. “You probably still interact with your manager and co-workers, but that hour-to-hour basis, the day-to-day basis, that really is up to you to keep on track.” If you do your best work where you’re reporting your progress throughout the day and getting new tasks from your boss, working at home might not be a good fit. 

Once you've narrowed down your service offerings, you can let people know that you're open for business. An easy way to do this is by posting a notice on Facebook, a community bulletin board, email, or word of mouth. In fact, when I was younger and looking for babysitting gigs, I posted a flyer on our church's bulletin board; and I had more jobs than I could handle. Once you have some takers, discuss payment and the jobs details. In these sort of situations, you should be paid upon completion of the task. So, the sooner you start getting the word out, the faster you can start earning money.

In a traditional office, you have the eyes of your boss on you — or at least the perception of being checked up on. Personally, I’ll back this up all day long. Freed from such minor daily tyrannies as showing my face at a certain time, minding my lunch breaks, looking busy, preparing for pointless meetings and making sure I left at 5:02 p.m. instead of 4:55 p.m., working from home enables me to empty my mind of several thousand cells of useless thought. If you’d like to specialize in medical transcription, there are certification courses you can take; you can also benefit from having healthcare-related experience so you’re familiar with the terminology. The same applies for legal transcription – you can do a certification course, and it’s helpful if you know legal lingo or even have legal reference materials at home. If you’d like to do law enforcement transcription, that most often has overlapping requirements with legal transcription.

Is the bedroom interior design, including colors, soothing? Can you hear household noises, or do you feel that you’re in a world of your own? All of these are important questions to ask yourself, but the answers will determine whether or not your guests recommend your place, or come back for another stay. Think about all the minor inconveniences and discomforts that you’ve just gotten used to over the years, and remember that a paying guest might not tolerate those problems for a night. You may need to spend a little money to fix these issues.

Some of the companies on this list are those you’ll recognize. Dell, still one of the largest PC vendors in the world, regularly hires project managers, business analysts and systems engineers for remote work. Salesforce, which came in at #3 on Forbes’ list of the world’s most innovative companies this year, hires telecommuting account executives, product designers and even upper management positions like regional vice presidents. Xerox, Adobe, SAP and American Express also make the list with their own distinct sets of work from home and remote work agreements.


Another common one? It's called the Secret Shopper scam. You get a letter or see an ad or e-mail saying you can be a secret shopper, shopping different stores, acquiring different products for a company. Sounds simple right? It's starts out that you receive a check in the mail from the company you're supposedly doing services for, and "working for."

As you can see, there are lots of fun and flexible ways to make money from home! Whether you're looking for a part-time position to supplement your family's income or a full-time career, there is something for everyone! And with advances in technology and a widespread shift from negative attitudes towards telecommuting towards acceptance, more and more positions are available remotely.
Socialize. Great post and all, but is it possible to make money from a blog without teaching people how to blog? Seems like most of the money making blogs out there make money from affiliates for starting a to blog! Making Sense of Cents is one that comes to mind. She’s a huge pusher for Blue Host, which she doesn’t even use. A huge portion of her income, if not all, is based on teaching people how to blog.
That’s the rub, Bloom says: Working from home is not for everyone, and to tell if you’re one of those everyone, do a quick systems check of your self-discipline. “If you can really concentrate at home, you’ll be more motivated than with someone standing over you with a stick,” Bloom says. His study found that younger workers whose social lives were more office-centric tended to avoid working from home, and it was favored more by “solitary, per-hour” workers like call center reps (like Ctrip’s), editors and senior managers—who probably were highly self-directed.
Communicate your work schedule to friends and family. Spence suggests you communicate with your loved ones that you’re working and ask them not to call you unless it is urgent. Make your office hours known and clear to the family, and make sure they respect your working hours, Foss says. “Don't be afraid to defend your work time, McCausey says. “Being my own boss I can decide on the fly to flex my time and run off to have lunch with a friend - but that isn't possible for everyone. Some will think that since you work at home, you can do whatever you like.”
