Yard sales are great to find things, especially books and jeans. I'd get lucky and find a pair of Lucky Brand jeans for $1. Sell on eBay for $100. Keep your eyes peeled, and do your research. After a while, you'll know exactly what goes and for what. If you keep your cell phone with you, never let them see you looking up something and then try to buy the item. You just told them it's worth something, and you'll never score it for a good deal now.
Socialize. Especially when you’re getting started, you need to establish contacts who are already immersed in the business. They can act as mentors, keep you up to date on industry changes, and even help you land your first or subsequent job. Look for the local chapter of the Association for Healthcare Documentation Integrity (AHDI) in your area and join.

The reasons you've listed are exactly the reasons that I work from home! No more need to commute, dress in a certain way for work, no expense of buying lunch. My only problem is that I continue to work again in the evening just because I enjoy it! Ha!! I get several thousand hits to my blog each year. My problem is that I get hits from all over the nation and my industry (health insurance) requires a state license. I can only offer general advice to people in Califonia. In order for me to earn any money, my prospects have to live in one of the states in which I am licensed and have a competitive product. I have tried advertising on Facebook for hits in my state but have been underwhelmed. I need more state specific hits. Does Google advertising work or would you have another idea for building state specific readership.

(The software involved can get more complicated than that, as you go along.) There are more small businesses wanting customized websites and startups trying to create that next great app every day, and coders can make a living along the way.

I’ve read elsewhere the optimistic messages of making money online, and understand the points in your post here too. Setting realistic expectations is important. I think my problem is being paralysed by fear of both success and/or failure. I’m afraid to be successful because it means putting myself out there (chronically shy), and scared shitless of failure for obvious reasons (generally around life security).
